I'm sure half that stress is due to social bullshit that has nothing to do with the teaching. Kids these days think the world revolves around them and behave accordingly. It's not surprising they have a lot of stress because of it.

>Doesn't give any citation
>Doesn't put either figure into context (what are insane asylums like now? what were high schools like in the 50s?)
>Implying you can accurately measure stress levels in an group of people who are mostly in that group due to unbalanced hormone levels or otherwise abnormal neurological activity
>Implying student stress levels are increasing over time as a result of school, not considering that it could be due to changing
>Implying between now and the 50s western family structure hasn't changed considerably

This is so stupid, school is not that hard. Kids are just lazy. Do your homework and study and it'll be easy.
User avatar #30 to #26 - burritobell (02/13/2014) [-]
It's not only school, but the social pressure too.

Stress/anxiety can be measured measuring cortisol levels, but I still think it's bullshit. I mean, which asylum are we talking about? And which high school? Now, if it were to be true it would be because the high school environment is one hard to deal with. Sitting in a classroom for 8 hours a day, thinking about the 3 tests you have, the huge amounts of homework you're given, that girl you like, those guys who hate you, etc. In a sentence, it's probably bullshit, but stress levels in high school students are probably above average due to the school's general environment.

Couldn't that be (assuming it's an actual fact and not made up) due to the fact parents, family and societ as a whole is pressuring kids to always be number one student, number one in sports, better than anyone else has ever been, with the whole "having to decide on a career for the rest of life while still having to raise a hand to go to the bathroom" deal, while this same parents, family and society scream "McDonald's" from literally everywhere?

I would be stressed as well.

"Kids have it harder these days"

I can't believe people actually can say that. The only worry in the 21st century (assuming you're living in the west) is to study and get money. Thats having an extremely easy life if you compare it to the lifes of our ancestors.

More luxuries, but waaay more pressure, expectation and information we somehow need to deal with.

These facts piss me off, it just says "High school students" but never says how many or what percentage, for all I know it was only 3 or every single high school student
User avatar #61 - Awesomecarrot (02/13/2014) [+] (11 replies)
Yeah I highly doubt that. I don't see many High School students clawing
at their own skin or killing people because they thought they were out
to get them.

As a senior with an anxiety disorder who takes all AP courses and might double major, I can verify this.

Because there's totally a way to measure levels of anxiety.

Highschools not that hard get over it

i believe it's because children today are too privileged; that there's a certain level of discomfort that comes along with being responsible, you're gonna have to do things that you don't like, and you're probably not gonna get rewarded for it. But children today are so unused to it that they think that their situation in life is much worse than it actually is, and it's probably their parent's fault.

These asylums need to step up their game
#217 - anonymous (02/13/2014) [+] (1 reply)
Commenting as anon to prevent the "crying for attention crap". I had a stint in a mental hospital back in early December for depression. It's pretty much like a hospital, a daycare, and jail had a baby and then you throw a bunch of crazy people and drug addicts in there and that's about it.
#105 - anonymous (02/13/2014) [-]
Maybe I'm mistaken, but doesn't Twitter have a really low word cap? How would they give a citation the source in the first place?

>Ah, but anon you fucking faggot, why don't they make another post as a follow up?
Because posting two posts would get old after a while when you have a twitter dedicated to giving facts frequently (Which is obvious in this case) They probably started out citing their sources, and got lazy eventually. If you're looking for a citation check comment #50, he compiled a nice list of links that barely got any thumbs or view (Typical for FJ)

Now here's a picture to get your attention, because without colorful stimulation nobody here would bother reading.

yeah I'm sure that living through a time period where you practiced hiding under your desk in case the soviets got nuclear trigger happy must have been a totally stress free and enjoyable learning environment.
