Yes, we're your and our family and friends, and yes, often, we're asked to give our lives in service of our country, but while we're hurt or dying, all military personnel learn to have a sense of humor about such things, however morbid it may be. It's how we deal with the pains, shocks, trauma, and bullshit we have to deal with. So respect your servicemembers and be sorry of their loss, but at the same time, do what your soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines do.
