Is top content meant to only be taking up two rows of space? If so then i find that a poor design choice and the amount of space taken up by top content and newest uploads should be equal.
User avatar #496 - assdoreponyfucker (05/19/2015) [-]
FJ is not growing due to the vast majority of inside jokes for content and the difficult accessibility (other successful websites have scroll through content while FJ doesn't) also all the comments on other websites are generic meme jokes wile FJ's funny comments are inside jokes. Addy you probably already know this but just putting it out there if you want FJ to grow you have to know why it isn't

A chat log? Maybe one that is just stored for a day, Hell maybe just a few hours.

It's too damn frustrating, when you are having a conversation with someone, and you accidentally change page, and you have no idea if the guy answered or not.

This idea would require a lot of work, but could potentially be an extremely valuable feature for the website:

Create a developers API for funnyjunk.

Crowd sourcing is extremely popular nowadays, and I could conceivably see there being a good community of amateur programmers that might actually create something of use for you. If not a developers API, then maybe something similar.

Here's an example of what I mean:

A year or two ago a chrome extension called "Stylish" caught the attention of the front page.
You probably already saw this app, but just incase...
Stylish allows you to modify webpage cosmetics, and you can add it to their database, so people using the app can visit a webpage, and use designs other users have created.
I remember some people that knew html made their own funnyjunk page designs, and i think one of those designs might actually have influenced your design of the homepage.

If there was a funnyjunk exclusive database for stuff like this, and a developers forum, I bet there could be some great results.

I have an amateur background in computer science, so I don't actually know what is and isn't feasible for you. I have a suspicion that this would actually require a ton of effort, but let me know what you think, because I often repeat my ideas for the site, and I'd rather not repeat this suggestion if you don't want to do this, or if you are already working on it.

TL;DR: try and crowd source funnyjunk development.

Oh **** !
Another idea built off this one!

"developers front page"

Basically, imagine the exact same thing as funnyjunk, that being aggregated content competing for votes, except for people's funnyjunk creations.
that, have people's creations be a new form of content along with all the other pictures/gifs/videos.

You would be creating an organic attraction to this feature, and you would be using the users as a way to sift through all the **** in order to find genuinely good ideas.

I'd like to see the return of static plain text titles on content thumbnails.
it's hard to do a page search without them.
This is especially helpful in the **** section when you're looking for something specific.
It's kind of a necessity actually. the funnyjunk search doesn't look at **** content, so really this is the only way to browse **** other than through thumbnails and guessing. (i'm not going to hover over hundreds of images. that's retarded.)

Will you consider my posts spam if I make constructive suggestions, then include a spoiler with a certain suggestion that you have already gotten irritated at me about?

Look, Addy, I'm sorry if I came off as obnoxious. I was already in kinda a pissed mood, and user experience is something I'm starting to take an interest in. I've always spent a lot of time thinking about what design decisions might improve software/websites/games, and I get a little impassioned. We cool?

ADMIN READ THIS! Idea for admin to make money off the site: Set up a page that allows people to change their FJ usernames for something cheap, like $1 perhaps. Each account could be given a UUID prior to this taking effect so any blocked users would stay blocked, as well as hide-all lists and so on You could also sell colored text and other cosmetic things, the possibilities are endless. For example, you could sell a "rainbow" colored username that warps through every color in real-time. The effect could last only for a certain amount of time, just how colored text works now, or maybe it could be a limited time offer that lasts forever for a little bit more money. If you set something like this up I guarantee you'd make way more off of it than you would off of advertisements. Since those offers are purely cosmetic and don't really benefit users in any way, there's no shame in selling it. I feel like nobody would have a problem with it, it would only be shameful if you started selling thumbs or something like that.

You said it yourself, the site gets hundreds of thousands of visitors every day. It takes money to keep online, but asking for simple donations with no reward isn't going to spark many people's interests. If you give them a reason to spend money, they will.

Hey admin! Make funnyjunk Freemium! The scourge of disgraceful pay-to-win games that have become to common lately totally won't cause any bad blood with the users! Nope! I'm pretty sure gamers and funnyjunk users are two totally separate demographics!

There's a difference between paying to win on a game and paying a few dollars for colored text/username on a humorous website. And obviously he's not going through with my idea regardless, so why bother with a pointless reply?
User avatar #493 to #491 - Lilstow (05/19/2015) [-]
Sure there's a difference between a pay to win game and the website...
Or is there?

Trying to get donations for cosmetics and stuff sounds good on paper, but there can be a lot of issues with it.

Sure, there's no way to "win" on funnyjunk, but users have competing goals.
i.e. users fight to reach the front page/get tons of thumbs.

The users that attract the most attention are those who post images, and those with colored text. I guarantee it would cause a lot of protest, and it's likely not worth the trouble.
Don't just assume that because this is a "humorous website" that people are laid back and don't take things seriously. People will fight to the death over fake internet points, and that's why you have to be careful.

If he's not gonna do your idea regardless, then why the pointless suggestion?
Never assume vocalizations have no impact.

Would it be possible to have a users own content be highlighted a different color and be visible to the user? I used to track where my uploads were on the front page but I can't seem to find them. As well, you should make a donation item. If a user donates $20 to the site, they get to ban a user of their choice for 3 days. Also for my account turning 6 years old at the end of the month, can I get different colored username or something? Thanks addy

Do you think we could get an comment editing system? I always double check for typos but I forever miss the bastards, it's a petty issue, I know. We could have an option make the edit visible to users, so people can't change their comment if they suddenly realize their opinion is taken negatively, and they suddenly try and push themselves in a better light.

Have you given up on FJ merchandise? I've got some ideas. Putting in spoiler so everyone doesn't have to look at my wall of text.
First off, looking through the current merch I'm never going to buy any of that stuff. I think the primary reason is I don't necessarily want others to know that I browse FJ and I think other users might agree. Nothing personal.

You can fix this problem by varying the shirt contents. I'd do distinctly FJ stuff. Iconic things, like DJ 4DMIN, the Pepe black twitter comps image, maybe a jab at Phan.act or, memes or references that only an FJ user would get. I'd ask the popular OC comic makers to design something. Like IsThe.Tie could do something really simple like a ******* tie, Zno.flats has a bunch of easily recognized ***** , and I'd ask MyOpic.Prophet if I can just put his nipples on a shirt. On all of the products I might add a small FJ icon, unless they charged a lot extra.

Then, to make sure to sell all of the item, I'd only buy a few maybe 100 or so. I'm not going to explain supply and demand, but it's a thing. You'll have a limited supply so they'll be almost collectors items. To get rid of your current stock, you can do a buy one, get one half off.

Next you're going to need to promote the products. I'd only release a new t shirt every month or so. Maybe sticky a post, then I'd roll for a comment or thumb number, like those fags do for Steam giveaways. Whoever was rolled would be given a free voucher for that specific shirt. You can even ask them to post pics of them wearing it to post on the next month's sticky.
In the future you maybe can ask users to vote on a design idea or create the designs themselves, but I wouldn't do that in the beginning.

If you want to use the FJ points for something, then you can set a high number and once it's reached, then they can be redeemed for the shirt of the month.

It's kind of a lot of effort, but in theory it should work.

If you search for a comment, and the comment contains only images with no text, you cant go to the comment.

Could it be so that clicking the thumbnail image in comment search results takes you to the comment as well?
