I think I heard that one of the devs mentioned she was originally supposed to be a playable character of some sort, but I'm not sure what to make of that. I really like her though, her story is sad, and I personally think she's beautiful. I have a soft spot for hybrids/half breeds in any sort of story/game. Maybe because I'm a mutt myself.

ive never heard of her being a player character but i have heard of her haveing been intended as a ally character or a coven character (someone who you have a i scratch your back you scratch mine relationship with basically) but they removed that because they wanted you to feel that even though the chosen can ally with others in the end he stands, lives, and fights alone hmm i think she is beautiful as well at least partly because of her demeanor

Most other subbers are relatively fine. A few better than others, but usually not by much.

Personally my favorites are UTW, Vivid, and Underwater.

The best thing to go by at first though is just what Nyaa picks as the best subber for a specific show. HS, for example, never gets chosen because CR subs aren't considered very good (stiff, too formal, bad font, etc). Vivid, on the other hand, has had every single one of their releases since forming chosen as the best subber for that show.

The only ones you should really avoid are Hadena and Subdesu. Most other bad groups die very quickly.

It kind of is, but there is a lot of lightheartedness to it. Easily the show I'm enjoying the most this season.

If you're going to watch it, you should probably watch episode 00 before episode 1. It's basically just a lot of fun, nonsensical stuff while episodes 1 and 2 immediately delve into the, honestly, poetic and somber atmosphere that explore and explain what didn't make sense at first. That way you wouldn't get backhanded immediately. You don't have to watch the 5 2012 ONAs though, because (In total it's maybe 30 minutes) the scenes in those are being incorporated into the TV series.

The music is also very good.
