Was it you that was talking about dwarf fortress?
User avatar #1218 to #1217 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaybe.
User avatar #1243 to #1218 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
It said that "you have discovered a great magma sea" also is there anyway to survive in a evil biome? i just get raped by zombies that never die.
User avatar #1244 to #1243 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
Seal off your front gate, get rid of any animals you may have and throw your dead down a pit full of magma. Basically, a complete quarantine. As for the magma sea, sometimes you find magma pipes in caverns. Those go all the way down to the magma sea. Same with volcanoes. If you throw something down there or a creature falls on its' own, it counts as discovering it. The last time I discovered it that way was to see what happens when you throw a caged goblin down a volcano. Oddly, the cage formed a sealed environment and saved it from a fiery death. It told me I'd discovered the magma sea, horrible things started crawling out of the volcano and **** hit the fan so had that the fans' blades detached, flew out the window and decapitated a cow.
User avatar #1246 to #1244 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
Also when you're building walls, how the hell do you get rid of the damn "a creature is occupying this space" message? it always stops me from building walls because the dwarfs always suspend the building
User avatar #1248 to #1246 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
It's annoying as **** and sometimes inevitable due to the dwarves' pathfinding AI. Just press "q", select the part of the wall, if it has a red "construction suspended" sign, just press "s" and they'll try again. If it doesn't work 3-4 times, it's not gonna happen, since dwarves are idiots who like standing in the square where the wall was supposed to be built.
User avatar #1249 to #1248 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
******* ******* . i wanted to make a cool gate for my fort but apparently i cant now
User avatar #1245 to #1244 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
But you can't really do that straight away because finding magma ain't easy so what are you supposed to do at the start?
User avatar #1247 to #1245 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
Just throw them down a hole that they can't get out of. Or squish the corpses with a bridge. There's a reason bridges are called Dwarven Atom Smashers or DASs in the wiki. If you get any pissed off ghosts, just make some stone slabs, care some tombstones and stick them somewhere.
User avatar #1250 to #1247 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
how do you make them throw stuff?
User avatar #1251 to #1250 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
Press "i", select a zone that's on a cliff or some **** . Mark it as a pit/pond area. Assign **** to it. It's harder for objects, though. You have to build a retracting bridge over the hole where you intend to dump the bodies, link the bridge to a lever, assign a garbage dump area on the bridge, mark the corpses and body parts for dumping (just press k to enter look mode, go over the part and press d), wait for you dwarves to dump everything and then pull the lever, so the bridge retracts and dumps them into the hole. It's difficult and takes a lot of time, so there's a risk of the corpses reanimating while you're carrying them. This sort of **** is why I never embark in evil biomes. Also, because I only embark next to volcanoes, but that's a different story.
User avatar #1252 to #1251 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
Why volcanoes?
User avatar #1253 to #1252 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
Because they're warm and cuddly. Why the hell do you think? Magma. Magma. Magma. It's the safest way to get magma from day 1. My most successful forts have one thing in common - they're always on a site with a volcano, sand and clay. If you have magma, sand and clay, you can basically produce infinite amounts of items for free (except beds, weapons and armor). That's extremely convenient and my industry booms. Not to mention the fact that it also means infinite metal. There's a trick. You can remelt items. When remelted, items return 10% to 150% of the materials they were made of. That means that if you make items that return 150% and remelt them, you'll get 50% more metal than you had at the start. Repeat and you have infinite metal. Plus, your metalcrafter/weaponsmith/armorsmith gets ******** of practice while doing it. Also, lava can be used to melt water in freezing biomes, destroy items you don't want, throw invaders into it and make traps.

Volcanoes are dangerous as **** to use and can destroy your fortress if you're not careful, but if you plan carefully and know what you're doing, they can be a source of awesome power. Also, it's fun to throw goblins and nobles down volcanoes.
User avatar #1254 to #1253 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
Are there always volcanoes in every world you creat?
User avatar #1255 to #1254 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
99% of the time there's at least 1. On larger worlds, there's more. The most I've seen is 4.

I HAVE RETURNED!

So, it's gonna be easier to explain **** to you if I know what you know. I group things in 3 tiers - basic, advanced and "Is this really necessary?".

-Basic involves gathering resources, mining, basic food production, booze production, trading and basic living requirements for your dwarves.
-Advanced involves defending against invaders, trapmaking, managing your dwarves' happiness, advanced living requirements, advanced farming, crop rotation, the clothesmaking industry, fishing industry, metalcrafting industry, glass industry, clay industry, meat industry, trade goods industry, gem industry, soap industry (more important than you'd think) advanced mining, stockpile management, military management and dealing with flesheating parasites known as nobles.
-"Is this really necessary" involves transport systems, sorting systems, prisoner abuse, advanced trapmaking, REALLY advanced trapmaking, trapmaking so advanced that it's impractical, but fun as hell, messing around with magma (also known as liquid Fun!), How To Train Your Dragon aka beast taming and hyperadvanced trapmaking. There's also Dwarfputing, which is basically using minecarts and levers to perform complex algorithms and **** , but I don't know much about it and it's extremely impractical and pointless. It's basically the ultimate form of showing off your DF knowledge.

So, just tell me which of these you know already and which ones you want me to explain first.
User avatar #1225 to #1222 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
I also know a bit about military, like weapons, uniforms and sparring.
User avatar #1223 to #1222 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
Everything in basic except trading, also, do you have skype?
User avatar #1224 to #1223 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
Yes, but I avoid using it. So, what do you want me to explain first?
User avatar #1226 to #1224 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
trading i guess.
User avatar #1228 to #1226 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
Also, it's important to remember that elves will leave if you try to sell them any goods made of wood, since they love trees too much. Also, they don't accept soap, since you need ash to make it and ash is made of wood.

I usually mainly trade food, since I produce too much of it. Food's one hell of a trading resource if you have a good chef, too.
User avatar #1227 to #1226 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
Eh, it's fairly simple. First you build a trade depot. It's a 5x5 building, so make sure you have room for it. Make sure it's near your entrance, so the traders and caravans can get to it fairly quickly. The only other thing you need is a dwarf assigned as a broker. You assign one by entering the Nobles menu (n) and then selecting a dwarf to be a broker. I usually make one dwarf be a broker, bookkeeper and manager at the same time. To trade, you have to transport the goods you want to get rid of trade to the depot. To do this, select the depot and press "g" to transport goods to it. At first, it sorts the items by how far they are from the depot, but as your broker trades, they become good at appraising stuff (telling how much they're worth) and you'll be given the option to sort items by value by pressing "d". Once the goods have been transported to the depot and the traders have unloaded their **** , select the depot and press "r". This requests a trader to the depot. Any dwarf can trade, but it's best that your broker does it. Once the broker gets his lazy ass to the depot, you press "t" to start trading. The items the caravan offers are to the left and the items you offer are to the right. Just go through the list, press enter to select the items you want and the items you're willing to give, make sure the trader's making a profit or they won't accept the deal, press "t" and all the selected goods will be traded. Done.

What next?
User avatar #1229 to #1227 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
soap and advanced mining.
User avatar #1230 to #1229 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
Eh, advanced mining is pretty situational, so I can't really explain it. Just avoid digging into warm/damp rock.

For soapmaking, you need a wood furnace, ashery and a soapmakers' workshop. The furnace burns wood and turns it into ash. The ashery makes lye from said ash. Then you combine it at the soapmakers' workshop with tallow to make soap. Tallow's just prepared animal fat. Getting tallow's the hard part, since you have to slaughter an animal to get some. Also, the dwarves like using it for cooking, so if you want soap and have just slaughtered an animal, press z, go to the kitchen tab, select the specific tallow and tell your dwarves not to use it for cooking.
User avatar #1231 to #1230 - kavrick ONLINE (08/29/2013) [-]
what about clay and clothesmaking
User avatar #1232 to #1231 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
For claymaking, you need natural clay. Then you press "i" to designate a zone for clay gathering. A single square of clay can yield infinite amounts. Then you just build a kiln or a magma kiln and start baking. The difference between the two kilns is that the regular one requires charcoal or coal as fuel, while the magma version doesn't. Good luck getting that magma, though. Also, if you want to use clay jugs for storing drinks, you have to glaze them. You need tin bars for that.

For clothesmaking, you need a source of thread, a loom, a dyers' shop (optional) and a clothemakers' shop. There's 3 types of thread - silk, plant fiber and yarn. Silk's the hardest to get and the most valuable, since it's produced by cave spiders, which are hard to get. Yarn is gathered by shearing animals (select the farmers' workshop and select "shear"). Plant thread is the easiest and most avalable to get. Just grow pig tails or rope reeds in your farms, select the farkers' workshop and select "process plants". Once you have thread, you weave it into cloth at a loom, dye it at a dyers' shop (if you have any dye. Dyes are gathered by milling certain plants like dimple cups, hide roots or blade weed) to increase the value a bit and then you use it at the clothemakers' shop. Clothing's important, since clothes deteriorate over time and your dwarves get pissy when they're wearing rags. Make sure you have enough shirts, pants, socks and shoes for everyone. That's the bare minimum.

Also, if dwarfs go missing, how do i get them back? a bunch of my hunters went missing in a snowstorm
User avatar #1234 to #1233 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
Wait, what? They can go missing in a snowstorm? I had no idea. Generally, they'll come back on their own, though.

is there a way to make my swordsdwarf move to a certain place? because i wanted to explore the cave
User avatar #1236 to #1235 - thechosentroll (08/29/2013) [-]
Yeah, but I can't give you the exact controls, since I'm not too big of a fan of the military. Basically, you press "s" to bring up the squad menu, select the squad you want to use and look for a "station" button. Also, for cave exploration, I recommend using animals like cats. I have, like, 20 cats locked up in a cage, since they breed like crazy. I intend to let some of them into the caverns when I find them on my current map. They reveal the map just like a dwarf would, they're expendable. If they spend enough time down there, they'll breed, resulting in even more little scouting units and you can sort of tell them where to go. If you designate a zone somewhere and set it to be a meeting area, they'll go there.

Houston, we have a problem. I can't say fаgmin and I have "good connections". I don't like him and I doubt he even knows who I am. Just because he unabanned me doesn't mean he did it because he likes me. I'm just a decent negotiator. Stiiiiiiiiill, I could try. What is it?

Well, a friend of mine abyx got her account perma-banned for posting loli in **** , she understood the rules beforehand, but had a little slip up and posted a loli GIF in the comments, she didn't mean to of course and now her account is gone. Yeah it sounds cheesy that she loved that account and all, but I'm wondering if you can somehow wager with addy to get it back?
User avatar #1178 to #1177 - thechosentroll (08/18/2013) [-]
Well, **** . What were the odds of that? My third permaban was for accidentally posting an **** gif during a gif dump. And to this day is the only ban I couldn't remove myself. I got help from ****************** or brolythesaint, since he deleted his old account. I'd ask him, since this is out of my area of expertise. Sorry. I could help with the negotiations, though. Or anything else I can. My best advice is to try and make a deal with fаgmin. Going on sympathy never works. Just make sure you don't come on too strong and annoy him. Also, don't seem desperate, since he'll try to **** around with you. Lastly, screencap your deal with him, just in case. I still keep the pics from my deal.

There are dosins of guides that can explain it better than I ever could. I'm better at the "dicking around" part. Also, you could get a texture pack. Look, I'm not here to argue with you or anything, I just, I want to clear something up with you.
I know I said I wouldn't reply to anything anymore involving this but you seem like an intelligent guys who is willing to listen.

I didn't get you kicked out of friendly. Hawke doesn't do that. He doesn't ban people because I ask him to unless they damn well deserve it, and anything you did was outside of Friendly, therefore not a problem with the mods.

I am not an attention whore, though sometimes all of us are, and I admit to it. When I said I don't need white knights, I meant for attention in being called pretty.. I went to the board for support by my friends. Females and males alike. A lot of them aren't white knights, although you can't avoid the occasional stalkers. Most of them are just my friends. Yes, I have regular friends because I act like a normal person now.

I don't act like the way I used to on the board because I have my spouse to give me all the attention I could ever desire, and therefore I never, ever flirt with another male unless we both are aware it's a complete joke.

Just please give me a chance, no, I'm not ******* innocent. I was a whore, but people change. I really hope you can understand that.
#1156 to #1155 - thechosentroll (08/10/2013) [-]
Assuming I'm intelligent was your first mistake. Assuming I care about all this was the second. I have nothing against you personally, I was just commenting based on observations. I'm not much of an "emotions" kind of guy, so I'm fairly objective. What I say is what I see.
