i haven't played the game and dont think im gonna get the chance to. can somone give a quick summary of the plot? spoilers don't matter as long as they are not overly large.

HL1: They do science and it ***** up.
HL2: The evil empire notices the **** up and ***** them up some more.
Portal: It's unintentionally related somehow.

Half life
>A theoretical physicist is hired at the Black Mesa facility where we performs an experiment that causes aliens from other dimensions to appear and the facility turns into chaos and destruction . At this point everything goes to **** and you must fight your way out....and you're being stalked by a man in a suit.

Half life 2
>Years after the Black Mesa incident, the earth is ruled by an oppressive race known as the Combine (combination of species and technologies). You meet up with your old colleges and friends, and start a resistance move against earths oppressors. **** got worse, you must fix it.

Half life 2: Episode 1
>Moments later, you leg it out of the city. ***** 'bout to get intense.

Half life 2: Episode 2
>You escaped, but it's not over. There's hope for humanity on a pen drive and a missile. You won, sort of ... I ain't gonna explain **** .

If you're into games, you'll like it
Or not, I'm not a wizard
Remember: Narrative > Graphics

Hope this helps

I love games. but i never really thought i'd be into HL. What is the weapons like? can you create guns like Dead Space?
User avatar #74 to #69 - sirfortytwo [OP](1 hour ago) [-]
Guns are good, each with their on kick.

No upgrades, you collect a variety of guns, hand guns, machine guns, missile launchers, grenades, a gravity gun and a crowbar.

Even if your computer is a potato, you'll be able to play it
First game came out in 1998, and the sequel in 2004

This **** is old school fun.

Naw m8. He isn't an engineer. Just play the games, it's like an old movie everybody praises, it's like the starwars of videogames without the ****** prequels. Play them all and see for yourself, trust me you won't be dissapointed.

gun creation/customization really only became a thing like 10 years after halflife came out, so no. there are a few creative and fun guns, though, but its a typical shooter for it's day.

meh i gave up waiting for half life long ago. it's clear valve don't make games anymore but software. plus the half life series has always been about showing of new tech.
#9 to #5 - quenz ONLINE (12 hours ago) [-]
VR? They were also working on special mo-cap software for HL a while ago.
User avatar #10 to #9 - meringueluka (12 hours ago) [-]
eh maybe, but the tech behind the half life game has been integrated into the way you play. physics (all those ******* sew saw (puzzles), AI (alyx) VR feels more like a sublment to a game, not something to create your core mechanic around.
#11 to #10 - quenz ONLINE (12 hours ago) [-]
It's a rather significant supplement if you ask me. VR isn't just a new toy. Plus, they could be working with any number of technologies for the next HL, we don't know.
#12 to #11 - greyblade (11 hours ago) [-]
think of VR like colour. it's a pretty impressive improvement, but it doesn't really change how you play the game significantly.
#15 to #12 - quenz ONLINE (10 hours ago) [-]
It's not necessarily just a new viewing device with a few cool features. What I've heard from people involved with VR indicates that it does really change the way you have to design games. For example, a writer and game dev working on VR recently, tweeted this: "Watching people trying to force GTA V into VR is scary - I'd be puking! Retrofitting games not made for VR tends to end poorly." Another example would be some things Gabe says in an interview from a while back. true, but that's to do with how you code the game. since there's not much change in how it's controlled, the actually gameplay probably won't change drastically.
#28 to #27 - quenz ONLINE (8 hours ago) [-]
They're not talking about internal design and the inner workings, they're talking about external gameplay and how the game feels and is experienced.

story has been done since years ago anyway. half life 3 isn't dead. they're just extremely hush about it. there was an interview last year in january with gaben where he said something like "you can ask me anything concerning valve, but half life". why would he be so secretive about half life if they weren't going to release the game? they are either waiting for source 2 engine to be done this year so they can release the game with it, or they will release the game later. gaben knows how large the half life fan base is. he wouldn't keep our hopes up for so many years if the game weren't in production. he would just say the game is cancelled and that way the "half life 3 confirmed" meme that he despises so much would finally die.

Marc Laid down with the Law
This made me the absolute sadman
Laidlaw, geddit? I'm trying to funny here, and not cry at the same time...

It seems like he's taking the freelance route to go into a more calmer setting. He might even do freelance writing for Valve, he just doesn't want to be under the constraints as a full-on company man (though Valve is supposed to have one of the most lenient self-management set-ups of any company).
#78 - anon (1 hour ago) [-]
Funhaus on youtube already solved why Half Life 3 will never be released by Valve.
The "half life 3 confirmed" meme did a big part in setting that in stone, too, so good job guys
User avatar #65 - bakinboy (2 hours ago) [-]
im more surprised by the fact that people expect a half life 3

The story is finished and the rest isn't far behind.
User avatar #54 - muguwana (3 hours ago) [-]

good, its been so long, that no matter how good it is it will be chastised for not being what every one hoped.... oh who am i kidding it could be just a video of Gabe jerking off with peoples money and people will try to make it game of the year because its valve
User avatar #36 - thechosentroll (6 hours ago) [-]
It wasn't gonna happen anyway. No game can live up to decades of anticipation. If they actually made it, most people would think it's a prank and those who played it would be disappointed.
User avatar #30 - staticstyke ONLINE (6 hours ago) [-]
it would've never lived up to its hype in my opinion
