I've always wondered, is it pronounced "TIFE-ling" (long 'i') or "TEEF-ling" (long 'e')? I think the former is correct, but I've heard both used.
Relatively new D&D player here.
Could someone explain why Tieflings have so much variation in terms of their anatomy?
Some have humanoid feet, some have hooves; some have tails,. some don't.
Please and thank you.

The appearance of any one tiefling often depends on the exact ancestry that spawned it, a bloodline that might remain dormant for generations. Diabolic or demonic tieflings might, besides the common horns and tails, possess a forked tongue, leathery or scaly skin, the smell of brimstone, or unusually warm flesh. Some accounts even hold these tieflings to cast neither shadows nor reflections. Some diabolic tieflings also sport goat-like legs or hooves. Tieflings descended from rakshasa might have furred skin or feline eyes. Most tieflings have only one or two of these features.[9]
Some tieflings are not descended from mere fiends at all, but from powerful gods. These tieflings often have their own physical characteristics that set them apart. Tieflings sired by Beshaba, for instance, often have antlers instead of horns and pale, white hair. Those sired by Mask, on the other hand, are known for their tendency to cast no reflection[10] while half-fiends spawned by Bhaal often appear physically identical to humans, a characteristic they may have passed down to their descendants.[citation needed]
In Mulhorand the most common tieflings were often those spawned from a union with Sseth or Sebek. Most tieflings are, however, the grandchildren or even great-grandchildren of fiends and in Mulhorand’s neighbor, Thay, most tieflings were spawned deliberately by powerful wizards as part of some elaborate plot for power.[4] (Please note, however, that, since the spellplague, Mulhorand no longer exists on Toril and is, presumably, now part of Abeir.)
tl;dr descendants of cursed people or those who had relations with demons/devils depending on setting.

Tieflings are one of my favorite races in D&D idk why. Just the ability to make them so unique with the extra features and how that can play in a campaign.
And their diverse statline/traits. Still make best casters though.

I've always enjoyed Witch for them. But that's mostly because of what a witch is in my head. Someone who's very offputting to others, a loner, someone who isn't there to make friends and gain power for themselves(Usually) and what I based my own Tiefling witch on.
I have a friend who played a tiefling ranger and good times were had, we used to mess with her and tell strangers she had hooves and smelled funny.
So you said she was an Eredar from WoW?
On a semi-related note. My one friend actually rolled twice on the "Features" chart for Tieflings in Pathfinder. Got Hermaphrodite and Androgynous at the same time. Oh god my sides were in orbit.

Pretty much, she ended up getting wings through a bloodline feat so we really layered on the OH **** SATAN IS COMING TO TOWN with the friendly villagers. Never got the full blown panic myself and my sorcerer buddy were looking for.
"Hmmm is it a boy or girl? Both maybe? Don't know until you try it Dave."

LITERALLY, had that conversation multiple times.
Also, was it Draconic? Because if so she at one point could've breathed fire and really went for the whole satanic thing. What alignment was she?

Lol, both could function about the same for full blown devil/demon.
I love the tiefling set up, but they can be pretty cringy when certain people try to RP as them. Tieflings and drow are the only races that always drag the edgy middle school kind of RPers.
I'd agree. But the edgiest person I know never played them. He only played Elves and humans but **** man... His characters were 10x ediger than Tieflings I've seen. While mine was a social recluse looking for power, at least she didn't go fedora tipping or anything.
Jesus, got any stories about your edgy player? And personally, I always prefer playing the big dumb characters, mostly because it usually opens up RP decisions I normally dont get to pick if my character has the other half of his brain. Also makes joining the group alot easier if I make him a jolly idiot as well.
I like to play snarky but 'good' characters. The best alignment for me is Chaotic Good I've found.
As for stories, on multiple occassions he's attempted to make a class that played like some anime ******** character Teremi who he made literally. ************** , broken. Like could drop 200 damage at level 8-9 because of some dumb ability called Blazblue. I mean he made it so after he pretty much passed out immediately, but the worst part. Every single time he used it. He had to do some big 'activation' speech from the anime. Every. Single. Time. This included test battles for ***** and giggles and he would NOT ******* skip it.

Im pretty thankful that I have never had to deal with someone is tries to RP as an anime character. I think the only comparison I have dealt with is just having a party of nothing but human fighters who want to punch everything. Or a rogue who plays like a high stealth skyrim player.
