I'm talking about the nat 20 on a roll you really want to be high. **** just doesn't happen without a multitude of sacrifices to Nuffle.
I've found it's closer to a 75/25 split for epic failures but that's just personal experience

I love how three people is considered "not too big" as if that's already a sizeable group of people.
For D&D, anything more than 4 can get pretty difficult to manage.

I've never played but I imagine a single player campaign to be a bit pointless and 2 players + Dungeon master is still a little small.
That doesn't leave a big margin.
Also since it's a club it could be more and they play in several smaller groups.
In town there's a student dormitory bar where they regularly meet and it's always several tables.

You're right on pretty much all counts. Solo campaign is kinda pointless unless you build around it specifically. Two players + DM can be okay if your players are active and imaginative enough. And, yeah, the margin for error is not wide. The sweet spot is typically 3-6 for me, since nowadays I like to have a party NPC with the group so I can kinda sorta get the chance to play a character I want to play.
And, yeah, you're also right, there could be a multi-game club. But, I'm only saying that an intimate game where everybody shows up regularly and gets to know one another, OP found a pretty amazing body count.

I saw it not from the context of D&D but in general.
Three is about the smallest number that qualifies as a group.
And since tabletop role-playing games have certain clichés attatched that seemed to fit with the presumption of the beta nerd that doesn't meet many people
