I saw this post, didn't get it, watched the movie and just came back, laughed my ass off
POSSIBLE SPOILERS HERE: So, I just saw Episode VII today, and not knowing anything about the expanded universe as to what canonically went on between Episode VI and VII may have hurt me because while I enjoyed the movie, Kylo Ren just hit a bit of a sour note with me. He seems more like a whiny edgy teenager with daddy (and grandaddy) issues than a supreme villain. Sitting in the theater, I could imagine him as a 12 year old, sitting in his room cutting himself while Han and Leia took the rest of the kids to go visit Uncle Luke and play Jedi with him.

Angry, hurt and confused form the pre-Sith trifecta. Most Sith were probably edgy and awful once.
True, but at least Anakin's reason for turning to the Dark Side was a bit more fleshed out and on-screen. He was scared for Padme's life, hurt by the way he was looked down on by the Jedi, and confused as to whether he should put the Jedi or the govenrment first. With Kylo Ren, all we know is that Han wasn't the best dad so Ben went off and started trying to live up to a villain that Darth Vader would've been proud of....except that doesn't make much sense to me because wouldn't he know that Anakin Skywalker turned back to the light before dying? I feel like that's something that Leia and/or Han would've told him about his Grandfather, and not just made him out to be Darth Vader, this horrible Sith lord that a villain should aspire to be like.....but again, this is where my ignorance of the extended universe may be hindering me.
