I liked the Original Cast showing up, I mean who doesn't? But I was more disappointed in the gimmicks and Nostalgia bait he used.
It's a nigh-identical reskin of Episode 4's Hero's Journey. Like, come on, it made sense for Luke and Anakin to begin on Tatooine in their respective sagas, Son following his Father's footsteps full circle, but for Rei to begin her adventure on a Desert Planet, with the only difference in name, being Jakku? When JJ Abrams said he was was going to tap into the spirit of the Star Wars, one would think he'd have deeper meaning than superficial gimmicks and tropes. George Lucas already did Desert Planets for the Desolate, Dead-End, and Meaningless Existence that the Hero escapes from in the beginning, is JJ really ******** anybody that this is the best he can do?! Hoth could have worked as a similarly lifeless waste, or a perpetually twilit realm of gloom, or even the stifling tranquility of a placid Waterworld would have been better, anything other than this copy and paste **** !!!1! Mad Libs would have made for a more interesting world..! Her journey begins when BB-8 has vital info for the Resistance (it's only one droid instead of two, so it's original! Same with the Broody Black Guy trashing a Rebellion post - Darth Vader? Nah, the New Guy Worships Him though!) And Starkiller Base? Too late I'm getting started: what's better than a Moon that can destroy planets (Death Star)? A Planet that destroys whole Star Systems! Knowing how JJ ****** up Star Trek 2, I wager he'd try to up the ante with a Galaxy-rending Star, or at least a Starkiller Base 2 since he's an unimaginative one-trick pony. Abrams promised this movie was a separate canon from the first six, but psych! Episode 7! Disney isn't fooling anybody with this 'New Original Canon,' this script was ripped right out of the Legacy Chapters. Kylo Ren and Rei are carbon copies of Jace and Jaira Solo: Kylo has already been confirmed as Han's son, though named Ben Solo, so I'm calling it out now that Rei's his twin sister, with her being a Force-Sensitive and all. Really, betraying decades of Extended Universe Fan Loyalty, it actually makes the Digital Remasters forgivable (which is saying something, 'cos Lucas retconned Laser Swords, Darth Plagueis, and Midichlorians FOR US, we just got to be careful of what we wish for next time, and may the Force have mercy on me, I PLEAD that Episode 8 tanks on JJ and Disney, that there is no next time.
Really, I had a lot of beef with JJ Abrams and The Force Awakens, let's just say that this movie did for the First Six what Into Darkness did for Star Trek...
I think the World is due for a Warhammer 40k Film Franchise right about now, Warcraft is getting one...
