Not sure what joy reactor is because that's a nerfnow comic if I've ever seen one.
I'm saying sauce is nerfnow.

just load up the good old original and do an ethereal night mission and enjoy losing to your own team before you even see a ******* alien

thats actually a valid tactic...think about it: humans are still vastly inferior in terms of technology, so any human that isnt an outright natural would die when facing the aliens. thus the group of three aliens can easily take down nearly any human they face.
HOWEVER if the human was one of those natural killers, sending in an army of mooks for it to kill would mean that they level up that much faster and possibly evolve into an unstoppable killing machine, by sending just three guys they minimize the evolution process that the human can go through in a single encounter. this allows them to isolate the truly dangerous humans and send appropriate squads after them to eliminate them with due haste.

i love xcom, but trying to finish the game on impossible-iron man is rage inducing.
Then you play a mission where you're in ******* halifax at a shipping are and you're literally in a zombie apocalypse.
At one point in time there was anywhere between 6 and 8 enemies running down my troops and murdering them. It ended my iron man

How is this game, is it anything like fire emblem?
not really... I mean it's strategy combat with permadeath but that's about it in terms of similarity. The soldier's "stats" don't matter insofar as their rank does. Their ranks give them skills that give them more malleability on the battlefield to fulfill their role (imagine if a pegasus knight needed to unlock the ability to fly over obstructions)
In addition to that there's also a base-management section that involves meticulous building and research to keep your troops well equipped. Your income is tied to a council that you cannot always please so your decisions matter regarding which missions you do (aka, no grinding allowed). Also if your soldiers get harmed they are out of commision for days equivalent to how hurt they got. So y'know, while fire emblem is about keeping your soldiers alive, xcom is about making sure your soldiers never get hit.
This is in conjunction with story missions that you need to complete. **** like getting within 3 tiles of an injured enemy and tazing them, rushing canisters of "meld" before they are self destructed, and other cool **** that I don't wanna spoil.
It's one of the best tactical games ever released. Highly recommended. Just don't expect fire emblem. Also you can name your soldiers after your friends.

Sounds interesting, though one of my favorite things about fe is that each unit has its own story and stuff.
The joy of xcom is making your own story.
for instance, my original team consisted of a whole bunch of my friends. Literally mission 1 one of my best friends gets gibbed.
his replacement? His girlfriend, wearing his helmet. She proceeds to become the move violent sniper on my team, quickly rising the ranks.
That's just one of many stories I've made in my campaign ^_^ I'd tell you some of the more insane ones but that'd spoil **** .

Put me in coach! There's nothing I love more than killing xenos
Make me a gunslinger sniper. I wanna blast 'em to death with my plasma pistol of justice.
