Same thing, but with dice, paper, pencils, and a bit more freedom.
It largely depends on the GM and rules you're using.
Still, there are a huge amount of systems and if there isn't one for what you want then you can homebrew it. As for the GM you just need to find a good one or do it yourself.
What I'm saying is, you have more freedom, but you're typically still limited in many ways by rules that lay out more or less exactly what you can and can't do, and what your GM thinks your character should reasonably be capable of. In that sense, a given campaign is not all THAT much more free than a sandbox RPG video game.
Yes, the rules are there to adhere to logic and to ensure nobody can needlessly **** over another player or break the game more than he should and any good GM knows when to ignore them and when not to. In that case you're still limited, but in terms of story, character interaction, and variety of what you can play there's no comparison between vidya and tabletop
I think we're kind of talking about two different things, here. I'm talking about after you've already chosen a rule set, chosen/created a setting, rolled a character, etc. Once you lay down the ground rules, what everything and everybody is and does, all standard game development decisions, the field narrows quite a bit. Yes, if you take into account every rule set and possible combination of character/race/feat/talent/skill/perk/aspect, etc., tabletop is infinitely more variable. But, once you've established some things, things obviously become more concrete and immutable.

So quick question.
For someone who doesn't know the intricacies of DnD (but has the basic concepts down), would it take long to figure everything out? Do I need to figure everything out if I just want to be a player? Does this apply for roll20 (or whatever other online DnD things there are, since that's likely what I would be using unless I join my college's gaming community)?
Thanks'

To be honest, it depends on who you are playing with. If your dm is by the book, there will be a steeper learning curve and vice versa. There a lot of rules and trying to memorize all of them would be an exercise in futility but the core rules are fairly simple. TBH the most difficult/confusing/time consuming part would be character creation so I would recommend having someone help you out with that if you can. As far as roll20 is concerned, it has ok functionality but I personally prefer playing with actual people. Feel free to message questions.
Isn't it fundamentally just rolling skills/stengths or whatever they're called, knowing racials and stuff, and picking out special skills (out of a huge ass list) alongside like classes

**gffishdragon used "*roll picture*"**
**gffishdragon rolled image**Sort of, but that's a lot easier said than done. There are a ******* of options and they all modify the existing information, you just need to keep organized. Plus the combat rules can get really confusing at first if you want to do anything more than wack a monster with your weapon.

Story time
Me-dm
party: Dwarf monk, human summoner w/ edion and flight, human druid in beast form, human rogue,
setting: bandit camp, middle of winter
>dwarf monk has hammer that gives him flight by throwing it,
>dwarf fails takedown, throws hammer to escape
>fails, succeeds in rolling to make second "flight"
>earlier players argued as what time of the year it was, january 5th with heavy snowfall
>dwarf land and balls up into snowball
>can't escape, summoner tries to help, ends up dropping him from 120ft in the air with edion
>druid has been in massive fight with rest of the camp, rouge sneaking about killing others
>dwarf snowball lands wreaks everyone, including druid and rogue
>dwarf survives, rogue at half health, druid survives barely
>big bad comes out of his cabin after snow ball hits

My ex was the one to get me into dnd, and now I feel like I can't play it anymore because of how bitterly we ended. It just reminds of me when he wasn't a cheating asshole.

Anyone know where you can play DnD online with others? It looks like so much fine.

>Play P&P RPG (not D&D that time)
>Accidentally trigger rule only the DM knew existed. (A legitimate rule, he is the only one that actually read the rule book.)
>Becomes demigod due to rule
DM has since tried everything imaginable to kill me. Being a halfgod suddenly makes groups of top tier units manageable. DM hates my character... He is considering sending full blood god like beings just to finish my character off...

I would quite like to get into d&d but I don't have the friends. Does anyone know a good site to do it online/ want to join?
I really want to get into the DnD world but lack the know-how. Anyone wanna send me a friend invite and fill me in. Would be much obliged.
