Half-Orc Barbarians are the best of all characters, nothing is more entertaining than fist diplomacy.... With extra modifiers
Currently have a Barbarian 3/Druid 2 Half Orc. He's the super tank. Totem path with bear for first pick. Half damage from everything non-psychic when raging. Wildshape 2/day with the ability to heal while wild shaped. Still plan one day to take Barbarian 3/Rogue 17....new special edition of fun

guitarassassin (12/14/2015) [-] Never played DnD. Or any Tabletop RPG for that matter. What am I missing?
Pen and Paper RPGs can either be like the steroetypes where there is dudes in a basement using figurines and talkin with ****** accents, or it can be a group of people sitting back and talking out a story with their characters using only their imagination or dice. All groups are fun and different, you just need to find a group, set up, DM, and setting for you. The settings or set up are easy to do because your going to agree to that before anyone even rolls characters. DM and group are a bit trickier, the real issue is making sure that DMs dont pull the "special snow flake" or "rail roading" BS that they can pull. Power gaming players are annoying but easy to deal with. The biggest issue is making sure everyone is into it, especially new players. It really sucks to start a group and have half of them leave by the third session.

yeah, I prefer more charisma based characters, if that's cool.
what edition?
what edition?
I've always been curious on how this game works.
So the stuff that happens to every person is always invented by the DM or there are some kind of rules?

Here's how the game works, at least for 4th Edition D&D There's lots of versions out there
There's a DM and some players, the DM is in charge. The DMs power is absolute, if you don't like it then you have to talk to them out of the game or leave. The players can try to do anything they want, and have to roll to see if they succeed on the more difficult tasks.
Rolling works like this - You have a set of skills. Your stats affect your skills, for example having a high dexterity improves your thievery skill. You can also train your skill, or have a background benefit, or some such. All of which increases your skill. Suppose you had a total of +10 to your thievery, and you wanted to pick the lock of a door. The DM decides on a Difficulty Check (DC for short), say that it's 25. You roll a 20 sided dice and add your bonus. In this case, if I rolled a 14 I would barely fail to unlock the door, whereas on a 19 I would easily do it.
Sometimes the DM decides the outcome of a success, sometimes you have to roll other dice. For example, in the example of unlocking the door, the DM would just tell me it was open now. In a fight however, I would have to roll other dice to see how much I hurt them. In this case, the enemy would have a defense that I would roll against. If their defense was 20 and I rolled a total of 25, I'd hit. I'd then have to roll another dice, say an eight sided one, to determine how much damage I actually do.

Oh, it's great. We have a text file full of out of context quotes said in full seriousness during a game. Here's a couple of my favorites.
"This is all well and good, but she's not lactating so it won't work."
"You disgusting mammals with your nipples and your menstrual cycles."
"You discover the trees are quite placid."
"I thought you said flaccid."
"Yes, flaccid oak trees."
"It shows up on his book as ink, not semen. You cannot transmit your semen across the kingdom."
I say "Hail!"
The guard replies, "No, it's a clear day."
"I am the noble Lord Theren. And this is my gigolo."
"Ever since I was born, I've felt like I was never really valued by the world."
"Sorry, what was that?"

are we doing dnd stories
>be monk
> in party with wizard, rogue, fighter and cleric
>walk into final boss room
>nothing
>look up
>giant spider with wings
>it jumps down
>destroy its legs so its army class lowers
>legs surrounding spider thing
>wizard sets legs on fire
>destroy all legs
>thing is now flying
>fire is spreading and cant be stopped
>soon the battle is basically us running from the flames
>fire everywhere
>climbing on **** to get away
>spider thing just knocks us off
>room is now 80% fire
>run circles around the fire searching for things to just throw at the spider thing
>room is a lab
>mix chemicals together and throw vials at spider thing
>eventually make explosive formulas
>throw vials at spider until it dies in explosions and fire
>magic needle reveals itself
>grab it
>fire disappears
>sigh of relief by everyone in the party
> "THERE WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE ANY FIRE"
>wizard almost killed us all
>lost a couple weapons to the fire when we threw them at the spider thing
>and that was only the second boss out of 4

Fire and Webs...don't mix. One of our sessions the spellcaster tossed fire at the webs in the giant spiders room..except there were captives we were supposed to rescue on said web as the fire was spreading. Good thing my character took levels of druid so I was able to wildshape into a spider and get to them.

So quick question.
For someone who doesn't know the intricacies of DnD (but has the basic concepts down), would it take long to figure everything out? Do I need to figure everything out if I just want to be a player? Does this apply for roll20 (or whatever other online DnD things there are, since that's likely what I would be using unless I join my college's gaming community)?
Thanks'

To be honest, it depends on who you are playing with. If your dm is by the book, there will be a steeper learning curve and vice versa. There a lot of rules and trying to memorize all of them would be an exercise in futility but the core rules are fairly simple. TBH the most difficult/confusing/time consuming part would be character creation so I would recommend having someone help you out with that if you can. As far as roll20 is concerned, it has ok functionality but I personally prefer playing with actual people. Feel free to message questions.
Isn't it fundamentally just rolling skills/stengths or whatever they're called, knowing racials and stuff, and picking out special skills (out of a huge ass list) alongside like classes

**gffishdragon used "*roll picture*"**
**gffishdragon rolled image**Sort of, but that's a lot easier said than done. There are a ******* of options and they all modify the existing information, you just need to keep organized. Plus the combat rules can get really confusing at first if you want to do anything more than wack a monster with your weapon.

dragon ****** up all the warriors, but the bard started singing and the dragon liked it so much they let the bard live
now who's laughing

Out barbarian once woke a dragon...when we where level 5. It was a map from the internet with a story by our DM - it was sheer bad luck that we even entered that part of the map
Only our magician died, tho.
I (thieve) talked him into letting me go by telling him I´m just a messenger by some other monster we killed in the adventure before.
Our cleric took the time to subdue himself in the ground, only his nose showing to breathe (he lost the nose, though) and our other characters managed to flee while I talked to the dragon and our magician heroically gave his life to buy them time.
it was neat.

I really really really really want to do some DnD or Shadowrun but every single group Ive been in has died after 3 sessions. :c
My only friends that are into tabletop games live 300 miles away. He and his wife play with his coworkers every weekend.
