How do you get companions to change clothes?

I gave a cool detective cloak to Valentine - nothing

I gave dog armor to dogmeat - nothing.

W-w-well... Your face is an abomination

Also you may have an army but we have Strong

I don't really like the Brotherhood since the Lyons aren't there

Maxson is pretty cool.
User avatar #314 to #313 - thatdemonbaneguy ONLINE (11/27/2015) [-]
He's got a bad haircut and he's a strict idealist. He looks at a situation and will only see it one way, anyone who disagrees with him is an enemy.

That's not the mindset of a hero. That's the mindset of an authoritarian dictator.
User avatar #315 to #314 - bewailedbadger (11/27/2015) [-]
Look at it from his perspective, though. Your enemy is someone who can impersonate a human flawlessly. If you're arguing with him, there's a chance that you're one of them.
User avatar #316 to #315 - thatdemonbaneguy ONLINE (11/27/2015) [-]
So all of the Railroad must be comprised of hostile synths.
User avatar #317 to #316 - bewailedbadger (11/27/2015) [-]
They support the rescue and saving of runaway Institute synths who could pose a problem in the future.
#318 to #317 - thatdemonbaneguy ONLINE (11/27/2015) [-]
Better kill 'em all, then, they're obviously bad people.

Better kill all of the Minutemen, too, while he's at it, they might try to stop him from dominating the Commonwealth and killing thousands of people.

Killing all these screaming, sobbing synths is hard work, maybe we should build death camps and just do it efficiently. I hear gassing synths en masse is really easy, then we can just throw them all in mass graves or burn their bodies in massive crematoriums. And while they're waiting for their turn to die we can use them as a free labor force!
User avatar #319 to #318 - bewailedbadger (11/27/2015) [-]
Except...that's hardly what he does at all. You never go after the Minutemen because they don't pose a threat to their goal of saving the Commonwealth from the Institute/Synths. Literally all they want to do is just stop the Synths/Institute.
User avatar #320 to #319 - thatdemonbaneguy ONLINE (11/27/2015) [-]
My point is that he's trying to wipe out what is essentially an entire race of people based on very little to no prior knowledge of them. He knows nothing of the situation but he's charging in full speed ahead with the intent of killing hundreds, maybe thousands of sentient beings based solely on the fact that some of them are hostile. He likened synths to an atomic bomb, if you call. He likened sentient beings to an atomic bomb. Sentient beings with free will, hopes, dreams of their own, to him they're all just a faceless threat.

He's literally Hitler exterminating the Jews, given that I don't think it'd be much of a step for him to decide that he needs complete control over the Commonwealth to complete that goal to it's fullest.

I haven't gotten to the end of the game yet, I think I'm probably about three-fourths of the way there.

I'll see a bit more of what he does on my Brotherhood character, but as it stands now I'm not looking on him too favorably and I don't like this new Brotherhood he's got. They seem to have reverted from the good old Brotherhood I knew and loved in Fallout 3 to the older Brotherhood that basically were snobs who looked down on everyone as inferior to them.
User avatar #321 to #320 - bewailedbadger (11/27/2015) [-]
If you read Piper's first article, you'd know that There was a synth that infiltrated Diamond City, and due to a bug in his programming, ended up going on a killing spree.

Sounds pretty dangerous to me. They're also literally AI. They aren't a race of people.
User avatar #322 to #321 - thatdemonbaneguy ONLINE (11/27/2015) [-]
Indeed, one did. An early model, from the sounds of it.

Cortana from the Halo series is also literally an AI, perhaps more so than the synths here, and she very much has a personality, has hopes, has wishes and dreams. We could debate about "Different universes, different rules" there, but in the end it just comes down to whether you think artificial intelligences can be human or not.

Let's look at several facts. Spoilers follow.

Synths are, indeed, artificial creations with advanced AI. By generation, synths get more and more advanced, starting with Gen 1, which are literally just humanoid robots, then progressing to gen 2. You may note, when fighting Gen 2, that they seem to understand emotional concepts like fear, as they will on occasion accuse you of being afraid. While they are most definitely still robots, that is a very advanced thing for an AI to grasp. Then we get to the hot topic. The gen 3's. If we could take a look at one of the companions in the game here, Nick Valentine, for a moment. He's not gen 2 or gen 3, he's a prototype that sits in between, with the body of a gen 2 but the mind of a gen 3. I point him out because he has a significant amount of interaction with you.

While one could claim that Nick's shows of any sort of emotion are simply a facade, I'd tend to argue that this is not the case. He seems to be quite genuine, and he works with you against the Institute, the people that made him, for all of the game, and from video clips from the end he can and will fight with you to destroy the Institute, the people who made him in the first place. That's not something he'd do just out of a desire to fake being friendly to you. That's not mentioning that he's helped the people of Diamond City for years, and he's an earlier model than even the synth that went haywire.

There's also the matter of runaway synths. A lot of them show significant distress at things that may be happening to them, and given the number of times I've seen it while working with the Railroad it's simply not possible all of them are faking it. I've seen it in cases that haven't managed to contact the railroad yet, as well, namely Jenny, a synth that was being hunted by a courser in a later mission for the Railroad. You kill the courser and have the option to release her, and if you do, she thanks you fervently and says that she hopes to see you again.

There's also the very matter of the fact that the Institute sent a Courser after her. They wouldn't send a courser to kill a sleeper agent just for the laughs, given that coursers have an embedded chip that lets them teleport in and out. While coursers can fend for themselves very well, sending one out is a security risk. they wouldn't just kill a sleeper agent for the lulz. THis leaves the implication that these synths are indeed leaving the Institute because they simply want to get away from the institute. This implies that synths do, indeed, have free will, and a desire to live. These two things not only imply Synths are possessed of sentience, but sapience as well. Synths are not just as good as humans, or able to pass as humans, they ARE human in most every sense of the word.

Which is why Maxson is an idiot for not doing his homework before rushing in guns blazing and becoming the new Hitler.

Whew, that was quite a text wall and I apologize, I've always found the debate over whether an AI can be considered sapient to be a very interesting one.

I uphold that in this case, yes, we should consider the synths to be sapient and afford them all the rights accorded to any human.

It's a synth helmet, and you can get it (guess) from dead synths, or buy it in the institute.

Much like all the other aspects of the game Bethesda tried to rip off from bioware, the romance falls flat on it's stupid face because they neuter and streamline it. Just like the dialogue system and companion morality.

Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but the dialogue makes me want to throw things at Todd Howard.

OP has excellent taste in waifus.

Same thing happened to me, but with raiders instead of deathclaws, and minor damage instead of dying.
