I have a problem with CGI when characters have to interact with CGI characters.
It takes me out of the movie when I can tell a character is CGI and the performance of the actor usually suffers and doesn't convince me.
I thought the CGI of the dinosaurs in Jurassic World was alright, but I can't take it seriously when Pratt interacts with them. It's just cut to a dinosaur who hisses at him and then hard cut to Chris Pratt and he goes "whoah, back off".

Just needs a good actor to make you believe the CGI character is there.

Funny thing when small group of people with next to nothing budget makes better Hitman version than big studio with loads of cash

Wow, kinda eye opening. In some movies where I've complained the CG is poor, it was actually the practical effects.

I personally only like CGI for when it's appropriate, for example, Godzilla 2014, holy **** did he look fantastic. Imo, Godzilla looked better in CGI than he ever did as a man in a suit. He felt bigger, looked nastier, looked more real, and then there's this awesome moment.

Or how about the upcoming Star Wars Episode 7? Watching the trailers, it looks amazing, the cgi for the X-wings and the background shot of that star destroyer looked fantastic. That trailer alone gave me faith that the new trilogy would out do the prequel trilogy in terms of special effects on its own.

What I hate is CGI done on something that shouldn't have had it or was more realistic without it. Like the Ninja Turtles, the 2014 film garnered almost worse reviews than TMNT3! One big reason, the turtles looked terrible, they didn't look real, they were CGI. The original turtles films, they were just guys in rubber suits, and as a result looked more real than the CGI turtles (plus they didn't have all that junk like the new film did).

So while I get what this guy is saying, in terms of CGI, it's how it's used that's ruining the industry imo. They use CGI for a lot of things that could've been done practically or looked better practically, which there is a fine line, the question is where is it, where do we draw it?

I don't mind CGI for watching a movie, but it's definitely a step back for movies as an artwork, and I find it more impressive if it's handmade

CGI isn't a step back, it's a useful tool and great when used properly. But too many directors use it as a crutch and as an excuse not to go to the effort of making models and filming on location.

because you can see it is fake, no matter how well done, the second it becomes the focal point of the screen.

OF COUIRSE noone notices CGI in the background. woow, haven't you discovered a new America

I study filmmaking and we did have a decent discussion about this topic.
We came to the conclusion that CGI is supremely practical for creating a location you otherwise aren't able to get to, but for practical effects props like guns or swords or armours are preferable to make.
If any of you guys studies filmmaking too, or is into filmmaking, I can see if I start from time to time to do some kind of "behind the scenes" stuff.

I wonder if movies that use large amounts of CGI end up looking bad because it is a much bigger project. Things like mad max aren't so bad since a lot of stuff was practical effects mixed. but once you start adding cg spoons, that is when mistakes start to be made and quality suffers a bit.

But this is cool info, will definitely check out more of his channel in the future.

the reason why CG comes out at us is because it becomes jarring.
Its never a limitation of the media itself, rather it becomes the fact that on one end, its something that we're not used too, we look at it and its clear that its not part of the world and that it doesnt belong in the world as well know it.

Just look at any Anime and point to me which show has good CG. Its very rare, and to be perfectly frank no anime can do it well, because you're rendering a 3D scape on a 2D plane. And the problem is the fact that we can clearly tell that it shouldn't belong there.
While live action and anime are completely different, its the same kind of sensibility in which we realize that there are good examples of CG and terrible examples of CG. The movie can be dated but we accept them because the quality of the movie itself is fantastic. Not the CG.

Pacific Rim was virtually mostly animated, but in such a way that its completely believable. While on the other end you have ****** effects that alienate the world around itself, contrasting taste and visual attention.

The limitation of a movie has never been CG, albeit CG can be judged to be good or bad. The limitation of a movie is the movie itself.

tl;dr Im a faggot and movies are watchable because good writing or screenplay, not because of CG.

CGI should only be used when it has to.
Completely green screening a whole scene just to include an extra few cars is dumb.
doing it to add a few extra cars, a UFO and godzilla then maybe.

I've never minded CGI, it's only in Horror movies that I hate CGI. I would prefer some slightly weird puppet over a giant, lumbering CGI monster anyday. Totslly takes me out of the horror element, in any other genre I don't mind it.
