either way the US out numbers any nation when it comes to military assets. the russians ARE cute compared to us. We have more aircraft carriers than the entire world's nations combined. you do the math. Russia cant even hold on to the few decent things they have...recently have been trying to sell off the typhoon class subs and air craft carriers to china because theyre too poor. Russia sucks dude.

Actually they are stripped down like you say, but only to a state where they can be rapidly restored to a usable condition should the need arise.
Yes we have a tendency to over emphasize quality over quantity when it comes to what we use and buy militarily. The boneyard is plan B in case that ever fails us and we need to rely on industrial-age-style attrition warfare.
You cant manufacture dozens of Gen-4 aircraft a week like we did in WW2, but you can restore dozens a month from the boneyard.

Excess is the American spirit. "why do we need a 338,000,000$ ********* jet General?" "cause we can god dammit"
I'm talking about that waste of money the f-35 that has literally no reason existing when a. It's price tag is unjustifiable and b. All the roles it has have already been fulfilled by other better planes. Air superiority?f-16 ,ground attack?a-10,stealth craft? F-117? . And all of these are way cheaper than that DoD rip off
That's not what I've been hearing

My main beef with the f-35 is that honestly what air force in the world can even touch the USAF in the air why is a 338,000,000$ jet,the most expensive weapon in history mind you, even necessary beyond landing DoD contractors and their executive overlords tax payer money.

what a joke. the dogfight is all but over. the f-35 can out engage all the other aircraft, just like the 22, but can also perform ground support ops. If the dogfight is what we've got to fear, then I'm not worried.
(09/26/2015) [-] The **** the U.S. throws away is still more advanced than the latest and greatest that Russia has. Most of their tanks, aircraft, and other armaments are upgraded versions of base models originally introduced in the 1980's at the height of the Cold War. Granted, they are upgraded, and can still pack a serious punch to most countries across the planet, they are nothing in comparison to the Billions of R&D that the U.S. puts into its military every year.
We have **** that the average U.S. citizen doesn't have the slightest clue even exists. And neither does any other country, until we have to use it...

i get it they're technically behind but there's no way they're that far behind. the ("official") end of the cold war didn't stagnate their development by as much as we're led to believe.

(09/26/2015) [-] Perhaps I shouldn't say "throws away", a lot of our military surplus is retired and stored for a time of emergency, as well as donated to fledgling countries in need of better arms. (I believe up until about 5 years ago, Poland was using Jet fighters from the 60's and 70's. Or something like that.)
The point is, Russia is quite far behind when it comes to military ADVANCED technology. They have plenty of good-old solid iron, but when an airstrike takes it all out in a line being guided by a satellite, there isn't much they can do.

actually if i remember, currently their main battle tank has been updated and is ahead of what we are using right now.
Remember reading it on one of those /k/omps

they can be reactivated in a matter of days-weeks, all depends on the amount of Engineers and supplies on hand.

It's only nations that think they are relevant and have power and third world nations with dictators. I find it funny because the US has nothing to prove. Being in the military, these always make me laugh.

yea its kind of against our principles as a nation, though you will have several military commander who no doubt are actively trying to change that
generally speaking though, we dont flaunt our military assets to the public because thats what totalitarian regimes are best known for

It's a propaganda piece, countries with authoritarian governments always do this because if they can show how strong and mighty the state is they can keep their populations happy. "We ain't got enough money for bread and electricity but hey look at all those strong Russian soldiers, slava Rossiya!" and the same in China, North Korea etc.
In developed countries the government doesn't do this **** because:
1) It would be considered provocative and in bad taste. Countries in the western sphere have celebratory and anniversary events for the military which are far more dignified.
2) The population (in general) isn't brain washed enough by propaganda to stop asking the government to fix things just because they put on a big show about how great we supposedly are.

Not even remotely comparable. A bunch of troops marching around in Dress uniform to honor the fallen is much, much, MUCH different from the point of parading BALLISTIC MISSILES, TANKS, AND APCs down the middle of your capital. The point of the parade in the OC is literally to show off your power.
Hell my high school ROTC unit marches armed in our local homecoming parade. At least the rifle team does. And they never do any shooting, they're just a form of drill team. They're just showing military discipline through weapon handling, which is more for the reactions of the crowd than anything actually practical militarily.

Nope, the parade in the content is to honor both the victory of the allied troops during WW2 and the fallen and surviving troops of WW2. Do you just make stuff up and hope it's right?

Yeah, no. Try not assuming people are ignorant of other nations. There are stated reason, and then there are actual reasons.
www.cnn.com/2015/05/08/europe/russia-victory-day-parade/
"It also helps us understand why for Russians like Lidya, Victory Day is not just about remembering the past, but about projecting power too, and sending a message, a warning to anyone who dares threaten Russia again."
www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2015/05/01/russia-victory-day-parade-putin/25889185/
Increasingly under Putin, the parade has became a way to "legitimize and sanctify state power." Gudkov said. "The more celebration, the more people will be prepared to submit to state power. First and foremost, it is a message to the domestic audience, where there is something of a national complex of inferiority," he said.

The first one speaks of one person and how she sees the parade, that seriously means nothing. The fact that some Russians become less paranoid of invasion because of the sight of the military doesn't change the real purpose of the parade. Even Americans become proud when they see their military on parades, no matter the size. The size of the Russian parade is undoubtedly because of their enormous sacrifice during WW2, they obviously want the parade to be grand because of that reason, that just speaks for itself.
And the second article is pure opinion and perspective, did you read it at all? It even says that Putin doesn't care who attends, as it's a purely Russian holiday, which means they don't wish to show off to anyone. There are zero facts or sources in that article. I don't know why you would want to use that as reference, the whole article is written on quotes said by a grand total of three people.

While that may be true, in Russia **** like this only happens on the 9th of May. Partial cause is honoring the WWII (or to be more precise, The Great Patriotic War which lasted from '41 till '45, the part of WWII which Russia took part in), the other cause is for raising patriotism (which is not very high imo).

So marching along with the national anthem is thirdworld? Pretty sure america does this all the time.
How did I call it third world? Also, it's a little different having three or four companies march down a local town's road with their class As on opposed to having thousands walk down a main street in a city with dozens of tanks. Kind of like when North Korea basically drove everything they had through their capital.

To anyone worried about fighting these people, don't be. This video shows they're very good at marching in time together, but those skills are useless on the modern battlefield. Being pretty in formation does not translate to battlefield prowess. Usually the opposite in fact; all the time spent making sure everyone was nice and neat and in line was time not spent learning combat drills or battle formations or weapons training, or anything relating how to kill the enemy.
Show me a video of their combat training, and maybe, MAYBE I'll get nervous.

No, it's about what they spent their time learning. Instead of learning how to kill people, they learned how to march in pretty lines and how to maintain pretty uniforms. Discipline only takes you so far, at some point you need to learn actual tactics, something these people obviously didn't spend too long on. There's a reason the Marine Corps infantry doesn't teach drill at all; because nobody ever died because the enemy had a spiffy uniform or perfectly bloused boots.
Now if there was a video of them doing some badass training, I would get scared.

Russian training and equipment have fallen behind that of their US counterparts so in truth those boys would be sent to their deaths if a non-nuclear conflict were to take place.
There's a reason the T-14 Armata and their fifth generation stealth fighter have been hit with delay, and for why their AK-74 modernization programs are still ongoing.

Expensive to build and maintain and it comes with an autoloader alongside shell storage in the turret. Not sure what to make of that vehicle for whether or not it can go toe-to-toe with infantry AT weapons and even the upgraded Abrams.
