NIV Deuteronomy 25:11 If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, [12] you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.

I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.

1 Timothy 2:12

That is a popular one for keyboard warrior atheists to quote (not attacking atheists in general, keyboard warriors in general but atheists for this particular quote).

The context of this particular quote is in regards to women leading the church at a particular church that he is writing to. The reason he tells them that they cannot teach is because women had few rights at the time and putting a woman in charge would result in horrendous social backlash that would likely be fatally detrimental to it.

Hey look, it's that one quote that atheists love to take out of context again!
#141 to #66 - anon (01/09/2014) [-]
Being completely honest I don't see how that can be taken in ANY other context... then again I'm catholic, I believe in God and I still think the Bible is full of cra p... The book was written thousands of years ago, going trough multiple censorships and modifications.... how seriously can you take it?

The bible is a compilation of books written over the ages by various men. This could be why such strong views on "Women must behave and never have sex at all or we should kill her with rocks" got put in religiously.

God did not want man to be lonely, so he gave him a woman, made from man's own bone. He gave animals to people to rule over. It is strongly implied that god desires one man to love one woman, and one woman to love one man simply because of this.

Also for those of you who want to poke at inbreeding.. In the BIBLE ITSELF it talks about a race of 'giants' who were populating the earth earlier. I'm a bit agnostic myself, but I'd rather have read and known about a choice than to leave myself ignorant and have an opinion.

Maybe if you actually read 1 Timothy unlike atheists on the internet you wouldn't seriously use 1 Timothy 2:12 as an argument. Plus, how are you Christian if you think the Bible is crap?

I read 1 Timothy. The rest of the passage is saying that women are **** because the serpent tricked a woman instead of a man, and that the only way they can save themselves is by being subservient to men and making babies.

I doubt it.

When is the last time you've seen a family with the wife as the head of the family that is not extremely difunctional?

Some translations replace "man" with "husband", making sense in the context as a warning for women to only marry those whom they trust. The whole section is kind of nice, actually. Obnoxious bitches don't go to heaven.

Pretty convenient to have alternative translations to go to.

Do you speak hebrew? if so id like to see you ******* translate through multiple languages and then writing a version of a book with the exact literal translation.

Hebrew words can have multiple meanings.
User avatar #194 to #48 - clydeninetyseven (01/10/2014) [-]
I can confirm, I can speak Hebrew.
Although in the case of the above passage, the vast majority of Talmudic Rabbis believe the translation to be "man." Women ain't got know rights, yo.

Could you imagine the LotR series with Jesus Christ dragging this ****** 500lb cross through Mordor?
#87 to #23 - doubleac (01/09/2014) [-]
Is this a counter-argument to the fact that LoTR is fundamentally catholic?
User avatar #231 to #87 - threeeighteen (01/10/2014) [-]
I don't think LotR's connection to Catholicism through Tolkien is actually relevant with this picture. I think it's sorta more straight forward, Jesus is trying to get into LotR's because he's hated in his book.

The great dickmungler as a God? That would be horrible. I'd rather have a God who abandoned humanity as a terrible mistake than have admin as a deity.
