He was also part of a special group that existed just to travel around the world, eating any new animals they discover.

At first I thought that it said "Charles Dickens'" and was about to get all up in yo' grill about ******** internet facts.
But then I read it again.
And I think reading things twice could solve all the worlds problems, actually.

It wasn't just them either, it took 300 years for the tortoise to get an official Latin name because they were so delicious that none of them made it back to London in that time.

the fact that it specifically says "tried" both saddens me and tells me of a long, arduous journey to ride a freakin' giant tortoise

Also another funny fact: For a long time after the giant sea turtle was discovered, a specimen was never brought back to civilization. This was due to the fact, that the sailors would always end up eating the trapped turtles. Supposedly it should be some of the most delicious meat ever, also they were quite easy to catch.

On long voyages, sailors would stockpile live Tortoises in massive numbers and stack them so they couldn't move to use as storage of food and drink.

This is because a Tortoise can store up to a pint of water in its body, so they were the perfect food for traveling. as they were dinner and a drink in one.
