Wow that's funny. My friend religiously checks Craigslist all the time, after he got his bike stolen he started checking out the bike sales area all the time too. About 3 months after it was initially stolen, he saw what may be his bike in an ad, so me and him decided how we would act like he was gonna buy it and haul ass. I took watch just incase this guy had friends with him while my friend started checking the bike out, when he found out it was his(everything except the new crappy layer of black rustoleum paint and oversized seat tube hammered into the frame) he "test rode" it 2 miles away where i met back up with him.

You do know its entirely possible that the dude was just selling the same model bike that your friend lost? And you might have just stolen a bike that looked like yours?

Nah, it was a rather custom bike. It had different cranks, seat, pedals, and tires then when he initially bought it from a shop in another city. He had the paperwork on it even though its a re-sell bike from the early 90's.

When I was getting a new bike (which was confiscated from the police for being abandoned and obtained through connections) I found a neat trick, at least, where I live.

You can actually register your bike with the local police. Provided a description and serial no., if ever it's stolen, you can report it and police in the area will be on the lookout for a bike of that description, with the authority to confiscate it and bring it back to you. (And they'd do it too, they said. Considering that there are almost no registered bikes, and it's a smaller rural town, it'd be a higher priority.)
