My neighbor was just 18 when the war began, and when Serbs took northern Sarajevo they took him and chopped out one of his eyes, cut off his right arm, cut off two fingers on his left hand so he would always wave 3 fingers (Chetnik symbol), they carved crosses all over his body, not to mention how often they beaten him...

When he was like a walking corpse they freed him and if it wasn't for a UNPROFOR helicopter that took him to Italy he would never have survived. Today if asked why he has no limb he says a granade's sharpnel hit him because he's too traumatized to even talk about it.

And that's just one drop from the sea...

Disclaimer: I liked this post very much, manly tears and stuff, and I do agree.
So this is my little take on this: there are people who've had terribly difficult lives; soldiers, miners, rescue-teams, idk. And yes, if there is anyone who has the right to complain it's them, but this whole "quit your whining, little girl"-fad is really, really wrong IMHO. The fact that YOUR problems and worries are more severe than those of others doesn't mean they can't have their own. Remember, these guys suffered and died so we could worry about saving tags from stores (who even does that?!) and walk on beaches thinking we should move on. No hate people, live and let live.
PLEASE, o please don't kill me

The one with the crying German soldier hit me hard - not all German soldiers were Nazi's, they were just doing what they were told, and some against their will.

WW1 was probably the most frightening war, since both sides, British & German, had little to no idea what they were getting themselves in for.

And it's not even funny, I mean, I'm not the one to laugh about dead soldiers and people in KZ's and stuff.

So in the end, you made a post that wasn't funny with an opinion that has been said a million times before in the exact same way. It wasn't my post, I just kind of agree with it. If people just put things into perspective a little more, they would ten times more emotionally stable and resilient. That doesn't mean compare your life to someone who lives in complete poverty, just compare it to someone who doesn't have as much as you (money, loving family, intelligence, etc.) and things wont seem so bad.
PS. I've seen dudes POST those kinds of pics before (that weren't directly about girls having fun) and it's the same level of excessive emotion

They can't do **** if you simply refuse. They haven't done **** to Jehovah's witnesses for over half a century even back then, when one year military service was obligatory. They can't put the entire male population in jail, if everyone refused.
User avatar #611 to #596 - badgerbaiting (08/23/2013) [-]
Although I think that everyone has the right to their own opinion... you're so very wrong. I can't agree. The fact is, if it wasn't for people volunteering to fight in the army, then you wouldn't have the freedom to type this.
User avatar #630 to #611 - unbelievable (08/23/2013) [-]
If there weren't any people volunteering to be part of the army in the entire world, there wouldn't be any goddamn armies, therefore there wouldn't be any military conflicts, therefore there would be worldwide freedom.
User avatar #635 to #630 - badgerbaiting (08/23/2013) [-]
An idealist view of a utopia. Also laughably naive. Before any countries were formed, people formed tribes. If a tribe was larger than another, they would invade or raid another tribe in times of need (e.g. famine which lead to the Incan Empire), to steal wealth (e.g. the Trojan war or any raid by any aggressor) due to religion or simply because they were lead by a dick.

The only thing that has changed is the tribes have grown, there is more demand for resources, we have become more efficient at killing each other and we're bigger dicks.

Whenever one human or a group of humans has taken something from other humans, there has been war. It will go on as long as human nature.
User avatar #663 to #635 - unbelievable (08/23/2013) [-]
Well, it certainly will if people with your mindset continue to exist.

Don't bring history into this. History shows us that mankind has changed considerably from the ancient times. A lot of practices that were considered normal in those times you speak of (human sacrifices, capital punishment for petty crimes, rape, pedophilia) have been eradicated.

The people of those times would have called you a delusional madman if you told them that in a few hundred years, regular activities such as stoning, hanging, raping, will be declared illegal and punished.

And the people that decided to be part of armies in those times deserved to die just like the people who enroll in the army nowadays deserve to die. You can't reason with them, just like you can't reason with people like you. You show them a path towards global peace, towards a world where everyone is equal and resources are divided equally, and they reply, " **** this **** , I'm alpha male, big muscles, gonna go out there and kill me some innocent people in Afganistan...".

And then they come home and cry after their lost limbs, and their friends who were killed in a battle that shouldn't have existed in the first place.
User avatar #700 to #663 - badgerbaiting (08/23/2013) [-]
Apologies for the essay.
User avatar #699 to #663 - badgerbaiting (08/23/2013) [-]
I would like to start by saying that I would love it if I could go out not having to worry about getting in scaps and people were just generally nice to each other, but you have to be realistic. People are inherently greedy; it's this greed that enabled the West to become so globally dominant and humans to become the top predator. It's part of our make up.

I would like to add that I am fairly close to the alpha male you described, with removed jingoism. When I was young, foolish and a cunt, I thought that fighting showed masculinity. Now I am older, wiser, more sceptical and just generally tired of the whole idea that beating the crap out of some poor bastard is "macho" I will happily let slurs on my ego to pass to avoid violence.

Secondly, why shouldn't I bring history into this? It's the best measure of humanity we have. History is the data from which we draw conclusions from after all. I agree mankind has changed drastically, we can kill millions of people with a button instead of one at a time with a rope or a sword. Additionally stoning, hanging and rape are legal in some **** holes in the world. Millions still die from famine and many in the West remain inhuman to it.

I find your point about people volunteering for the army deserving their fate crass and unfeeling; would you feel the same of a fireman or someone who dived under a train to save a child's life? Both groups knew the risks involved, why don't they deserve whatever injuries they are inflicted? How about miners? Oil riggers? Bomb disposal experts? Victims as much as the soldier surely.

I'll close by saying I agree with you, global disarmament and peace would be a great thing; one of the best things we could do as a species. But it's unobtainable. DEnied by human nature, availability of resources and fear.

I will ignore all ideas for new works on engines of war, the invention of which has reached its limits and for whose improvements I see no further hope.

You can say that all you want and think that there will be any chance of world wide peace, but there is and always will be one group of people who think another group deserve to die for whatever reason whether it be for religious reasons or land ownership. And since there is always one army that wants to attack another country we need an army to protect ourselves. Now stop acting like a child and thinking the whole world can get along, as long as we all have different beliefs and different governments there will always be war.
User avatar #783 to #776 - unbelievable (08/23/2013) [-]
Back in the ancient times, they said the same thing about sacrifices - "as long as there are gods, there will always be human sacrifices". Human sacrifices no longer exist.

Back in the 1800s, most people (including some of the U.S.A. presidents) said the same thing about slavery - "as long as there are poor black people, there will always be slavery". Slavery no longer exists.
