There's a type of artificial heart that will work but with one side effect. You will not have a pulse. please don't say because you'll be dead smartasses

I seriously doubt it was this highly developed bit of equipment that not doubt cost thousands of dollars and hundreds on man hours to develop that saved the child's life. It was probably all the parents prayers to their imaginary friend that did it. God + 1, Science 0.

Great post. The donor heart came from another 16 month old baby. No feels for that one though.

It's probably worth mentioning that it kept him alive for thirteen days until another one and a half year old child died with a functioning heart.

Not necessarily, a child yes but not necessarily the same age. Also why is it worth mentioning?

It's worth mentioning because that's what really saved the kid's life, the artificial heart was more like a placeholder. I'm aware that the kid that died didn't have to be the same age, but he would have to be close which is the point.

Yes, because people can stay alive for thirteen days without a heart..

For adults they have this massive complicated machine they oxygenates blood if the patients heart fails. They're saying this saved the child's life because before this was invented, a child would have died as they're too small and fragile to have a full Cardiopulmonary bypass.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying this part wasn't important; I'm just saying the actual heart from the dead child was more important.

Why do you keep emphasising the 'dead' part? Does it bother you that this teeny thing was credited but the donator wasn't?

Could anyone please explain how a heart smaller than Op's dick could pump blood around the whole body. I'm kind of stupid

It's not the size of the machine, but the power being sourced to the machine. Medical miracles bro

How readily available is this? Does anyone know? My 4 month old cousin has hypoplastic left heart syndrome and may need a new heart in the next month or two
