How is it heroic to die fighting the oil wars? Iraq and Afghanistan aren't a threat to the US.

I agree people are tricked into thinking they're fighting to protect home, but some of the things soldiers do take 10 times the courage I possess and their heart is in the right place on the most part. So I respect them, but I don't respect the institution that orders them, or the politicians that warp opinions and lie.

While oil is a reason we are in the middle east, don't forget that all Al-qaeda and the Taliban want is to murder all democratic westerners who do not follow 14th century Islam. Before the U.S. sent troops to Afghan, the Taliban massacred the citizens for not following traditional Islamic law (men having to grow beards, a woman cannot leave the house without a man, no education for women, etc) with public beheading and stoning. When the U.S. sent SF soldiers after 9/11 the Afghan citizens rushed the streets to thank them (although now the policy has changed after conventional forces moved in and now they are set more on "nation building" rather than protecting the civilians).

I hate it when people say it involves oil. We don't want their oil. If we did, we would have invaded Saudi Arabia, which controls 70 ******* percent of the world's oil.

Also if the Taliban were to take control of Afghan and more of the middle east they would be sitting on one of the largest oil reserves in the world, with that kind of money they would be able to get weapons of mass destruction and you and I would be ******.
I respect all men who have died fighting to prevent extremist groups from enslaving a population.

I dunno how being in the army makes a person a hero, really. Armymen can do heroic things and I'm sure they do. But on facebook I saw a friend share a picture of two of the people I went to school with in army attire, one was a bully and the other was a moron. They both got terrible grades and dropped into the army as it was the only place that would take them. I'm training to be a nurse, like my parents who have both been nurses for thirty years, I'll be saving lives one day. Does that not make me a hero?

Another point to consider, why does a profession that involves taking lives make you a hero, rather than doctors/ nurses/ firemen and any job where you're saving lives? It is heroic to, as it stands, do nothing for your country since when was the last time USA/ UK, etc had a war to fight that wasn't essentially farmers?

Worlds a silly place.

I don't think going to war and fighting in a war makes you a hero, I think to call all soldiers hero's devalues the word. There are hero's in the military, and there are also cunt's in the military. One thing I think we should all bare in mind though, is that it takes a **** tonne of guts to go out to Iraq and Afghan regardless of if you agree with why we're there.
I think all soldiers should be treated with respect until they act otherwise, not because they're all hero's but because they're doing something which has to be done which I am really not prepared to do.

The same however goes for Nurses and Paramedics etc. Some of them are Heros, some of them are Cunts, but they are all doing a Job where they take a lot of ****, and are doing things that others are really not prepared to do.

I don't think people should throw the word Hero around as much as the Americans do for example. The practically butt **** every soldier that is enlisted. Treat them with respect sure, but don't class them all in the same right as people who have won the VC or medal of honour. To do so is lowering the heroism that they showed.

"Another point to consider, why does a profession that involves taking lives make you a hero,"

On this point though, you're building a kind of slippery slope argument... You're only contemplating half the job... for example.

"why does being a paramedic make you worthy of respect? Why does waiting around for hours on end outside a hospital just waiting for a call to come though make you worthy of respect?"

"why does being a nurse make you worthy of respect? all you are doing is changing beds and bringing patients tea and coffee"

You see? you're missing vital points of each of those jobs. Soldiers put their lives on the line pretty much every day they're on tour, they're is a very very real danger there and it could strike at any moment, it's not fair warfare out there. Also because of the nato ROE, the taliban use them to their advantage and hide out in places that our soldiers can't return fire to...
