how do you serve your country when you are invading iraq and shooting down farmers just for fun?

most people in the military don't choose where they get to go, they sign up and then they get assigned and if they don't like their assignment they aren't allowed to just drop out. Now I'm not saying the war in Iraq was just or anything but the fact that at some point or rather they went through something no one should have to go through and that they did that in order to make it so that people of said country could prosper means they at least deserve to be recognized as the servants of said country, even if that country is corrupt.

I'm paraphrasing something but I don't know what:
Doctor: Which would you say is worse preacher, war or hell?
Preacher: Well hell of course.
Doctor: Ok, correct me if I'm wrong, only sinners go to hell?
Preacher: No you're right.
Doctor: Then war is worse. War has innocent children, elderly, and innocent people in the way.

Anyway its an alot better quote if I could just remember what its from and directly quote it.

They'll be using the dead bodies millions of years later to fuel their spaceships, then further on, they'll be like..."we're running out of fuel, we need to start wars and shit on other countries to get more"... and so on goes the cycle of life and death on earth

I grew up on an Australian military base and a LOT of my friends are soldiers. And to my amazement not ONE of them had negative feelings about their time in the forces, and most said it was the best time of their life. although one dude who was English (para 2) did believe he was brain washed. dunno felt like sharing.

War is bad but it is a necessary evil. We wouldn't have 80% of the technology we have today if it wasn't for the necessity of the technology being developed for war.

My time in war was bad but I won't get into the specifics, in short the saying is true. War is Hell. But sadly war is necessary for Humanity to one day evolve into a greater species. Most wars are started by the misguided and the ignorant, and once they are gone, true human progress can begin. I hate war and it is a terrible thing and very little good comes from bloodshed, but as long as we have emotions and opinions there will always be some level of conflict.

I find it strange for people to be so single-minded about a topic. For a lot of people it's "war is good" or "war is bad". It really isn't. Going to war for resources or "because you can" is bad. Going to war to protect others, or to defend a nation under attack, is good. You may hate the army, but they're there to protect you and serve whatever ruling body your country has (in my case it's the Queen, as every soldier pledges to the Queen rather than the government).

I have instant respect for any soldier, you lay your life on the line for your country, then the least I can do is show you respect. However, this doesn't mean that every soldier is a "hero". A hero is someone who acts selflessly to protect others, like a soldier shielding a child from enemy fire or a squad evacuating a village to protect the civilians from incoming hostiles.

Someone with a gun shooting targets they've been ordered to fire upon is not a hero, they're a soldier, no more and no less. They have my respect, but someone who puts their life on the line for others' safety (and no I'm not including "fighting for your country") has my admiration.
