It's an intellectual exercise. The point was that he put in enough detail and applied shading techniques to make it seem three-dimensional.

He drew it. He reproduced it. Tracing is when you do something like put a blank piece of paper over the artwork and follow the lines. He drew a picture of a real life object that was so detailed as to look three-dimensional. That's not tracing. In painting, it's called still life.
