Actually, Gandalf, as Olorin served IN Lorien, but spent most his time in the houses of Nienna, where he learned compassion and patience.
He also is known to be the wisest of all the maiar, (directly stated by Tolkien), wiser than even Melian, Ilmare, Osse or even Eonwe, whos know for fighting and finally killing Morgoth side to side with Tulkas and Turín Turambar in the Dagor Dagorath (Final Battle in Tolkiens Universe, could maybe compared to the Ragnarok of the norse myths)

Two questions:
#1. Who got the ring after Gandalf sailed away? Aragon, Legolas, Gimli?
#2. Sauron was tought by Aule as you say, but when was he allied with Morgoth? Sometime in Eä?
(And one more, what was before the first age? They speak of "Creating the world in the will of Eru" and stuff like that. But if they helped "creating" the world" they all must have been some kind of demi-God made out of the real Gods themself)

1. He kept it, pretty sure.
2. Sauron was a lieutenant to Morgoth in Middle Earth
3. In the words of the Ainulindale. In the beginning of all things Eru Illuvatar began to weave the music of the Ainur. The Ainur were the holy ones and lived with him in harmony and played their melody unopposed until Melkor/Morgoth began to weave his own music.

Just posting here cause i can: Gandalf was the strongest out of the five Istari (wizards) and the wisest. But he was also humble, and Galadriel and Elrond knew of his power but everyone else believed that Saruman was the strongest of the 5 wizards due to his power of speech and the metal work he could do.

TLR Gandalf is a bad ass ************
