This prick didn't tell us anything we wouldn't have known if people actually paid attention to real politics instead of always listening to sensationalist garbage from 24 hour 'news' networks. What was going on at the NSA was approved by congress, and 100% legal. Nothing was hidden from anyone, it's all there in black and white.

So no, this ****** isn't a hero, he's a traitor. Who the **** is he to decide what's best for the entire country? Classified information is classified in the interest of national security, and by divulging any of it, he has hurt this country. I only hope he is assassinated before he can do any more damage.

User avatar #210 to #178 - tffan (06/30/2013) [-]
The government classifies certain things because it would put the U.S. at a disadvantage if another country got a hold of said information or intelligence.
User avatar #358 to #210 - blacklightsun (07/01/2013) [-]
The real reason for the official secrecy, in most instances, is not to keep the opposition from knowing whats going on; the enemy usually does knows. The basic reason for governmental secrecy is to keep you, the American public, from knowing - for you too are considered the opossition, the enemy.

I'm not a troll. I work as a government contractor and I consider the protection of sensitive information to be both an honor and a great responsibility to my fellow American. That's why seeing this POS decide on his own that giving away classified information was a good idea makes me so angry.
#200 to #145 - swagbot (06/30/2013) [-]
So you KNOW for a fact that our government is only doing 'good things' for us?

No, you don't. Not 'for a fact'

Therefore, the fundamental basis of your argument "Classified information is classified in the interest of national security" is unfounded.

Also, please indicate how he had "hurt this country [by divulging information]".
> You can't, because the FBI/CIA haven't even indicated one genuine terrorist plot that had been thwarted with Dragnet Surveillance.
> He merely divulged THE FACT THAT the gov't is spying on all U.S. citizens in a report to The Guardian, an UK newspaper. He didn't disclose spying data itself.

Grow up. This Snowden thing has been hyped up by the media, but regardless, you're a fool if you think that Gov't Surveillance is ever a good thing.
User avatar #345 to #200 - BobbyMcFerrin (07/01/2013) [-]
The issue to me isn't about the spying. It's about one man who thought he knew better than the entire group of NSA workers whose only job is to keep the American people safe. As a government contractor myself, I put so much mental energy into making sure I follow all the rules with regards to sensitive information. It makes my blood boil to hear that someone entrusted with the same responsibility as me single-handedly threw away the work of numerous good Americans dedicated to protecting that sensitive information.

"Classified information is classified in the interest of national security, and by divulging any of it, he has hurt this country"

User avatar #344 to #326 - BobbyMcFerrin (07/01/2013) [-]
The fine details that didn't matter to us were the parts that were classified. Nobody seemed to notice what he said from that perspective. Well, nobody but China and Russia.

What the guy below me said about letting the terrorists know. But also they knew the public would over react and they didn't want to unnecessarily scare them. And guess what? THE GOVERNMENT WAS RIGHT! Way to prove them right by doing exactly what they expected you to do.
User avatar #289 to #255 - zaiopeperse (06/30/2013) [-]
If they'd told the public, they'd told the terrorist, that's probably their reason. Also, I haven't really paid any attention to the whole ordeal, the gouvernment only spied on americans, no? 'Cause if they tried to pull some internet police and spied on everyone then I'm giving up on american politics.
#339 to #289 - paradoxpoetic (07/01/2013) [-]
They have the authority to spy on any internet traffic that passes through or is hosted in the USA. The includes anything Americans do as well as most of the stuff that Canadians do, among other countries. And the "terrorists" either already knew about it, or they're not able to take advantage of it. The kind of cyber terrorists that feed on this information would have noticed it long ago.
User avatar #340 to #339 - zaiopeperse (07/01/2013) [-]
That's pretty much exactly what I'm thinking (So that means they can spy on what I do if it's on ,let's say youtube, even though I'm in europe? I may have misunderstood)
#352 to #340 - Womens Study Major (07/01/2013) [-]
Btu they never would. You're not important enough for them to waste their time looking up and neither am I. We have nothing to worry about.
User avatar #356 to #352 - zaiopeperse (07/01/2013) [-]
Again, that's exactly what I'm thinking. But really, just the fact that they can is enough to piss me off
#342 to #340 - paradoxpoetic (07/01/2013) [-]
If the YouTube servers are hosted in USA, I'm not sure they are, but if that's the case, then yes they can do that.
User avatar #343 to #342 - zaiopeperse (07/01/2013) [-]
Well at least they aren't all-out spying on the entire internet. Even as I don't really have anything to hide (The most productive things I do on the internet is talk to friends and play video games) I still like to do so privately. for example, I can only imagine some 16-year-old intern jacking it to my conversations to my now-ex. I'd be so sad for him, y'know?

TL;DR: Good to know =D
User avatar #290 to #249 - zorororonoa (06/30/2013) [-]
I somewhat agree that the government isn't out to get us and all, but a little healthy paranoia isn't a bad thing at all. Keep in mind that there have been corrupt governments throughout history, so saying that you have full trust in the government just as dumb as thinking they are out to get you. As for Snowden being a patriot or not, I don't really care. I don't think he is a hero but I also don't think he is a criminal.

TL;DR: don't act like the government is out to get you all the time but at the same time, don't act like they are perfect and are acting for your well being all the time
#294 to #290 - Womens Study Major (06/30/2013) [-]
Alright I guess I can agree to that. Some middle ground is always good.
#277 to #249 - strangesir (06/30/2013) [-]
Traitor? For doing what? Telling people the government is trying to watch everything you do? And I'm not paranoid or think the world is out to get me either, I just want my privacy. I don't need someone to be watching everything I do. And if a government wants to keep it's people safe, then it would do more and better things than just spying on them for the possibility that they are a terrorist.
#293 to #277 - Womens Study Major (06/30/2013) [-]
Yes he's a traitor. He signed a binding contract of confidentiality and he broke it. He betrayed the government with he had the contract with. No one is spying on you. There are BILLIONS of emails and phone calls made every day. They don't have the time or man power to actually look at all of these. They have more important things to do. You're no one important and neither am I, they wont be looking at any of our information don't worry.

User avatar #330 to #305 - sockbag (06/30/2013) [-]
i'm fully aware of that, considering the most recent major terrorist attack came from Americans and was at a fairly pivotal point as far as Americans opinion about the government spying on its people goes. Also i'm not sure you can assume the number of thwarted attacks, as it's confidential
#353 to #330 - Womens Study Major (07/01/2013) [-]
It's just common sense. If we weren't taking measures to prevent attacks there would be more attacks.

"this is a good thing" isn't exactly a response its an opinion, and where is your proof that it is working, if I remember correctly they haven't been able to prove that spying has helped them stop any attacks, I might be wrong but this is just what I know
#323 to #313 - Womens Study Major (06/30/2013) [-]
