When I first saw this series I thought that Amon would be Tenzin's wife, for reasons of messed up stuff like this. And also later on she encourages Korra to pretty much steal Mako away from Asami because she pretty much did the same thing with Tenzin and Lin, because she couldn't stand the thought of him being "with the wrong person". This character is an awful person and I hope the next seasons either do some a serious overhaul on her or make her a villain.

In her defense, it would probably suck to have children that nobody but Katara knows what to expect when raising them because they are different. Most parents want predictability.

If bending depends on genes at all (I don't know how it's supposed to work) wouldn't the kids have a recessive gene of waterbending?

It's basically confirmed that it's not genetic. Katara's parents, neither were benders but she was, also the creators said Sokka could have been one, but he never tried.

And meanwhile, Katara and Aang had a non-bender child. So it's clearly not dominant nor recessive.

Because that's definitely how genes work.
Once a trait is expressed in a lineage, there's no way it could possibly change so that future generations express a different trait.
That'd be ******* ridiculous.

And of course bending isn't genetic. That parents of a certain elemental lineage can only ever have children with bending capabilities based on that lineage is pure coincidence. Every time.

Recessive and dominant genes bro. Besides, it's canon that it's based on the person's spiritual connection, or possibly the parents' spiritual connection. Though there's still holes in that version due to some of the firebenders not being spiritual at all (killing the moon spirit for instance) as well as Aang and Katara (both are benders and spiritual ones as well) having Bumi, a non-bender.

Recessive and Dominant genes are the exact reason a trait can disappear and re-emerge in later generations, the reason why benders can have non-bender children and vice-versa. Learn what stuff is before using it as an argument.

The ability of any given child to bend an element is partly due to genetics (why firebenders can only have firebending or non-bending babies) and partly due to spirituality (a catch-all term to stop fans from calling out any possible genetic inconsistencies with bending.)

I do believe the type of bending is genetic. Yes, a gene can be hidden and carried down the line without showing, but that means it's recessive, which means it only shows up if you have both genes matching for it. Meaning that benders would have two recessives, no dominants, which means that a non-bending baby wouldn't come from two benders. Do you agree with this statement?

If genes could only work like that, then yes. But that's the most absolutely basic model of gene expression that only works for very basic traits.

Some genes show a mixed phenotype when both 'dominant' and 'recessive' are present, i.e. pink instead of red or white.

Some phenotypes are coded for by dozens of different alleles, with an immense variety of possible expressions dependant on all of the genes present. A simple example of this is the colour of Labrador coats, which use two/three alleles instead of one.
Skin colour in humans is similarly complex, with either two completely white parents being able to make a black baby or two completely black parents making a white baby, although I forget which one is possible and which one isn't.

This is true, I had forgotten about those parts of genetics, and how some can work on mixing. Though you would think that would allow people capable of two elements and not be the avatar.

I did actually, quite easily. If it were recessive, then that would mean that two benders (Aang having two bending genes, and Katara as well due to the sharing of chromosomes between their parents) then they couldn't possibly have a non-bending child like Bumi, because they wouldn't have a single gene for it. Meanwhile, Katara could have spawned from two non-benders, except that if it was dominant, then just having one would make you a bender. That means she couldn't possibly have non-bender parents.

Now then, have you completely forgotten about Dominant-Recessive genetics, or did you fail 7th grade science and then drop out?

Yes. There is a chance down the road that ANY airbender could have a waterbender child.
