I am very moved by this. I'm not one of those atheists who thinks that he is persecuted by the religion, or that religion is the cause of all war and hate, or that *************************************. You know, most atheists. But I have had far too many people tell me that I can't be a moral person without a concept of God. Intelligent people, unfortunately. It's made me mad and sad and not very glad at all, and I wanna shake this man's hand, because I love that he understands that what makes a good person is not the faith he has, but rather the life he lives.

Good deeds and evil deeds are still good and evil regardless of whether or not they're in the name of God. If you give money to the poor, or save someone's life, etc, you don't need to be a believer in God for those to be good things.

But what Francis said (not mentioned here but in his full statement) was that atheists can be redeemed, and that simply goes against the Bible. So while it's true that atheists can do good things, it is still only through Christ that we can be saved.

It was kind of sad to hear this story. I was liking him.

He's simply saying that all people are loved by God and that you don't have to be Christian to do good deeds. This doesn't mean that he thinks it's perfectly fine to be an atheist

i just wish people knew what the catholic church taught, I like how most people agree that Pope Francis is cool, but he really hasn't said anything different than what is in our catechism.

Vatican II says that you don't necessarily need to be Christian to be saved.

Until now, it had been said otherwise by those who honor a pope's word
