How the **** could someone go deep enough for it to be scary with just a snorkel?

You don't need to go deep at all. Just swim on the surface and look down with a mask. The moment you swim over the edge is really exciting and after that it's ******* terrifying.

src: was on vacation at the red sea (sharm el sheik), riff was only like 5 meters below surface and on the edge it dropped for several hundreds of meters.

Go practice snorkeling ^^
Its possible to reach deeps of 125-126m without any equipment. However we're going to leave that to the pros. Judging from the angle of light I'd say this picture is taken at least 20m underneath the ocean surface.

there's no way to know how deep that picture is. "angle of the light" has nothing to do with anything, and how dark it gets depends on current vis, water density (fresh or salt) etc.

Even when you're looking down from the surface, you go past a reef which is just 1 meter below the surface and then suddenly you find yourself looking at a 10+ meter dip. It can be a scary experience at first.

actually the human body can go extremely deep without any gear, your lungs squeeze to the size of a fist and it becomes quite painful but it is possible, there is a sport called free diving where the diver holds onto a sled that drags them down 200+ meters (record breaking numbers) and they release an airbag that makes them ascend to the surface. Quite impressive.

I snorkel. The only time it get's scary is in darker or more "polluted" waters where you cannot see your hand in your face let alone that mushroom cloud of sharks coming toward you to check out the shiny stuff on you. (If you are stupid enough to wear shiny stuff).

Other time is if you are a dumbass and go when it is dark out. lol

ASIANS CAN ACTUALLY READ MINDS!!!!!!!!!!!
They can hear, and see what you're visually thinking. This is the absolute complete truth!!!!!

Asians hide their mind reading abilities by a lot of them having completely expressionless faces so they don't accidentally show facial expressions when people think things they don't like, find funny, astonishing, etc, and Asians segregate so their not nearly as susceptible to that happening.
Asians also segregate, and are untalkative to avoid accidentally saying things that are similar to what people are thinking and going to say.

Try thinking, and visually picturing things that are as wild as you can when you are around Asians, and look for Asians who give people dirty/particular looks for what appears to be for completely no reason.

PLEASE SPREAD THE MESSAGE!!!!! THE WORLD NEEDS TO FIND THIS OUT!!!!!

I don't know from experience, but according to my Dive Master (the guy that taught me how to scuba dive) it is possible to make it to the surface on one breath of air from 80 feet, so I suppose it should be possible to go down deep from the surface.

The deeper you go underwater, the more water pressure there is exerted on you. This causes your body, and organs, to get compacted. The reason you can go from 80 feet to the surface in one breath is because as you go upwards, the water pressure exerted on your body is lessened, which allows your organs to "grow back" to their original size. Effectively, this makes your lungs, and the air inside them, larger the closer you get to the surface. It's a neat little fact.

you need to be careful, because you will "pop" your ears if you don't equalize the pressure on the way down. do this by shutting your mouth, holding your nose, and blowing. you should be forcing air up into your ear canal, or eardrum, or something. you can do it now at atmospheric pressure, but its not quite so pronounced. I happen to find a video this evening I will share with you that indirectly has a great example of this in it. You can see the man reach up to grab his nose, then hear the pressure build up in his ears. He does this like 6 times on his descent.

youtu.be/_JIKNLdEJ-s?t=2m48s

Also, the air sort of takes care of itself on the return trip.

the trick is to pop them every 15 feet or so to adjust to the pressure. if you don't and go deep enough, you'll pop your eardrums, which can lead to all kinds of problems.

in a word, yes. you swim really slow.

To cover decompression sickness: I've never actually done proper research into it, but i believe freedivers dont have much to worry about due to no additional air being intoduced into your system. it all compresses/decompresses at the same rate as you go down and up. I could be wrong about all that, but in any case its not an issue.

If you think the bottom of our ocean is terrifying, just image the oceans of other planets.
The creatures at the bottom of our ocean are already mysterious, alien, and horrifying. And they've been evolving alongside us undisturbed for thousands of years.

Now image the the same case, but millions of light years away. Where Cthulhu and Krakens pale in comparison to this nightmares.

And no stop for a minute and think and realize that we're working on going to these planets.

Image our far off descendants riding a boat on some alien world and colossal tentacles shoot out of waters while an eye lid the size of a city opens just underneath the water and they're quickly dragged or inhaled into the depths. This is an actual possibility.

Biology time, bros!

My country (Bulgaria or, as I like to call it, Europes' anus) is located right next to the black sea. Since it's only connection to the ocean is a narrow strait, there's hardly any currents in it. Why is that important? Because without currents the different layers of water don't mix or move, meaning that the deeper layers don't get any oxygen. Nothing can survive below about 50 metres, which means no scary deepsea creatures, no krakens, Cthulu ain't there and the biggest shark in the whole sea's small and scared of humans.

Have fun with your fear of open waters and the deep. I'm going swimming.
