In what science class do they have experiments with gamma radiation?
User avatar #59 to #53 - ningyoaijin (03/01/2013) [-]
I did it in A-Level Physics, and it's a regular choice in First and Second Year Labs in Physics courses.
User avatar #61 to #59 - fosforgasxiii (03/01/2013) [-]
Isn't that **** dangerous?
User avatar #63 to #61 - ningyoaijin (03/01/2013) [-]
It's absorbed by lead blocks, and it's nowhere near as harmful as people say it is. As long as your body's a few feet away, it doesn't do much harm if you're using a weak beta emitter.
User avatar #64 to #63 - fosforgasxiii (03/01/2013) [-]
Awesome, the only radiation we've experimented with at school was visile light.

I got injected with some form of radiation at a hospital for a stress test the other day and they told me I would be emitting radiation for the 3 days following and gave me a card to carry in case I was questioned as to why I was radioactive. They told me I could get people with weak immune systems sick if I stood close to them for a few minutes. I kept standing near people I knew who knew I was radioactive to freak um out. My brother covered his mouth when I was in the same room as him.
User avatar #38 to #31 - ladyluna (03/01/2013) [-]
You also shouldn't hold or be near babies or pregnant women.

But in all honesty, most people should be fine around you. I work in the stress lab at my hospital when I've got nothing to do in the rehab facility, along with a nurse that's been doing it for eighteen years. She's never had any problems, and neither have I.

Out of curiosity, did they have you do a treadmill test or a drug-induced test (Lexiscan or persantine, most likely)?
User avatar #42 to #38 - sheepysquirrel (03/01/2013) [-]
Treadmill. They wanted my heart rate up to 200 but I could only get it to 170 before I was reading to pass out.
I've been having lots of medical issues and fatigue is one of them sadly.

But they told me mainly to avoid older people and anyone with weak immune systems. My grandmother is a cancer survivor so they said stay away from her for sure.
User avatar #45 to #42 - ladyluna (03/01/2013) [-]
Ah, very good then! A lot of hospitals overuse the drug tests because they're easier to read. However, I don't believe they give you as good a scope on your health and functional capacity as a treadmill test does. You must be pretty young if they were trying to get you to 200. I'm sorry you're having medical issues :(
Good luck!

And most definitely stay away from grandma for a while. The residual radiation won't do her any favors.

btw, why did they have to test your stress?
User avatar #43 to #41 - sheepysquirrel (03/01/2013) [-]
Chest pains and high BP's for months. I went to the ER for my heart 3 times in the last 4 months. And even when I arrive with a BP of like 180/110 with a pulse of 120 they say nothing is wrong. And those are "at rest" which is tachycardic. (dangerous for my heart)
I get intense pressures like someone is squeezing my heart and then get lightheaded and dizzy and really fatigued all while doing absolutely nothing.
Last night my heart rate just shot up to 120 out of nowhere but my BP was only 124/88.

Gamma radiation can go through metal, alpha and beta generally can't
