We will never get rid of pennies because, as unlikely as it sounds, inflation may go down one day.

they will always cost more than a cent to make

Canada has already stopped making them

Or we could just add add more copper to the penny giving it back it's value... while we are doing that we could add silver back into nickels, dimes and quarters, then we could get rid of our terrible paper currency and use gold coinage.

The reason they want to stop the production of the penny(Congress, not Obama) is because it costs more than it is worth.

I don't think the penny is useless. If we got rid of the penny we'd have to restructure the pricing of everything. For example we couldn't sell stuff at $1.99 anymore, as the change would be uneven. Even if we change the pricing so that everything ends in a 0 or a 5, we'd have to account for tax.

The smallest coin in my country is 10c, and everything is still X dollars and 99 cents.
The stores just round the total up or down.

Lincoln was actually a giant asshole, yet of course they don't teach that in U.S. history class.

**fornowjr rolled a random image posted in comment #736694 at Friendly ** They really should retire the penny. It is really worthless and cost more to make it. I say get rid of it! Plus, he is on the 5 dollar bill. I hope i do not roll ponies.
