cover the left ballerina with your hand, close your eyes, keep your hand there, then look. do the same with the one on the right. look at there shadows as you do it. the shadow are not different. its a trick ok there is no right one, they all spin and depending on which one you look at they spin the same.
While the figure doesn't portray depth properly because it's monochrome and seen head-on, the shadow is cast at an angle so you can use the feet to determine the depth of the animation. When something is deeper into the picture, the shadow wil be cast deeper too and thus be shown further up. So as the shadow rises and lowers, you can tell if her feet are moving in or out depth-wise, and thus determine which way she's turning.
