Yes it's how they launch most ships.

I guess it is effective but it seems rather crude.

I would pay to be in the bridge when this happens.
#86 to #45 - karson (01/27/2013) [-]
I can tell it would be horrible. over the summer I spent a week on a 86 foot patrol boat(pic) doing offshore patrols. it feels really top heavy and sways about 15 feet from side to side in normal seas, and that took some getting used to. the inside of the bride has handrails covering basically everything, cause if you don't hang on, you can easily get knocked around. We rode out a storm, and that **** was swaying 20 feet side to side, and it was ******* horrifying. So I can tell you, I would not want to be on the bridge of that ship, which looks to be swaying about 30 feet, or probably more. **** that.
User avatar #104 to #86 - kingpokerface (01/27/2013) [-]
To be fair, you did say you were in a storm, which I admit I would probably be scared ******** . But in a situation like the content, and if they pad it or something, it has the potential to be pretty fun.
User avatar #184 to #104 - karson (01/27/2013) [-]
true, But if it were me I'd want something pretty solid to hold on to. haha
User avatar #68 to #45 - bigbeaufort (01/27/2013) [-]
So.... you'd pay to get slammed against the side a wall, and possibly suffer: a concussion, internal bleeding, broken bones, and possibly even death?
User avatar #71 to #68 - kingpokerface (01/27/2013) [-]
Why the **** not? I'm not currently doing anything of significance.

User avatar #23 - brokentrucker ONLINE (01/27/2013) [-]
Would it not make more sense to build the boat so that it points out to sea and launch it as such so it doesn't do it's best imitation of a Weeble?
User avatar #28 to #23 - anthonyh (01/27/2013) [-]
That's good and all except for the simple fact that Weebles wobble but they don't fall down.
User avatar #29 to #28 - brokentrucker ONLINE (01/27/2013) [-]
THE GOD DAMNED BOAT DIDN'T FALL DOWN.
User avatar #30 to #29 - anthonyh (01/27/2013) [-]
I know. So since it was doing an imitation of a Weeble, there was no chance of it falling down.
User avatar #25 to #23 - reduxalicious (01/27/2013) [-]
The water-way they are launching into can't support a Stern-First launch or they don't have the Stern-First system in place at that Dry-Dock. This method right here is a very common method for ships that traverse waterways/lakes, Most of your deep sea ships now day's are floated out. IE- They fill up the dry dock with water and tug's pull her out.
#54 to #25 - strikeoflightning (01/27/2013) [-]
But if it can't be sideways in the water way...

how does it turn around?
User avatar #67 to #54 - reduxalicious (01/27/2013) [-]
Most water-ways have spots for ships to turn around in, Or they'll just back out--If you're ever in the Cleveland area in the summer-time you'll see 600 footer ships go up the cuyahoga river--There's no spot to turn around unless they take it to the end, SO they just back it all the way out.
#70 to #67 - strikeoflightning (01/27/2013) [-]
Sounds like too much work. The obvious solution is to make boats have motors on both sides and make it be able to go backwards and forward interchangeably.
User avatar #75 to #70 - reduxalicious (01/27/2013) [-]
They can back out just fine using the main engine's, How we did it in Cleveland is just back up, use our Stern and Bow thrusters for steering and post look outs on the stern and bow. Though most fairies have the dual engine system.
User avatar #41 to #25 - texasredneck (01/27/2013) [-]

User avatar #34 to #19 - griphun (01/27/2013) [-]
I always wondered how they did as a kid. When I found out, it blew my mind. You should watch the dramatization of the life of the Titanic. Pretty sick.

#24 to #18 - anonymous (01/27/2013) [-]
Actually, that looks like a boat, not a ship. (Yes, there's a difference.) So it's just called the wheelhouse.
User avatar #37 to #24 - churrundo (01/27/2013) [-]
could you elaborate on the difference?
#50 to #37 - anonymous (01/27/2013) [-]
There are a few smaller differences, but the main thing is size. If you look up pictures of ships you'll see the difference between them and the vessel in the gif. If I had to guess, it looks like an offshore boat of some sort. if you look up Offshore Supply Vessels, those are the largest vessels I know of that are still considered boats.
User avatar #131 to #50 - fluffyz (01/27/2013) [-]
