I wanted to play a "real" instrument, but I'm mildly tone-deaf. So, I play percussion.

Not a real instrument, that's like singing, it doesn't really make you a musician.

Percussion encompasses a wide variety of instruments. It's a family (like brass, strings, etc.) Drums still require lots of rhythmic theory knowledge (polyrhythms, meter patterns, etc.) and within percussion, vibraphones, xylophones, and other vibe-like instruments require full knowledge of music theory.

Hell, I'm pretty sure pianos are technically a percussion instrument.
And I don't know crap about key signatures and whatnot, but the rest of the kids in our band always ask me the rest of their questions.

I think people in marching bands wouldn't even agree with that.
