It's supposed to be a sort of anticipatory statement. Rhetorically, "If you're reading this" naturally makes us want to read more because it builds anticipation, while just saying "You are awesome because X Y and Z" only appeals to our sense of self.

That and it's sort of a way of addressing future audiences from different time periods AT that time period. Sort of like the message in the bottle or note from that one guy in a lot of movies that says "If you're reading this, I've already skipped town/died/had the baby/married Fred the Milkman from Kentucky."
