When i worked at game station (a British version of Game stop) a guy bought bioshock 2 at the day of release, he then came back the next day to trade it in because he didn't like it, we gave him £15 for a game he bought for £42 a day earlier....then we put a £39.99 sticker on it and sold it within the same day. Trade in stores are ******** , if you want to sell your games sell them online, you will get more money for them.
#45 to #43 - lordaurion (01/16/2013) [-]
He couldn't just return it?
User avatar #48 to #45 - Faz (01/16/2013) [-]
He threw his receipt away.
#49 to #48 - lordaurion (01/16/2013) [-]
That is a problem then.

the guy sounds like a dumbass if you ask me.. not only is it common sense to NOT sell something that is worth £42 for £15 in the shops. even if you dont have internet to sell on ebay any person on the street would be willing to buy it for £30 easy.

other than that, he lost a receipt the next day and only dumbasses do that...

Not sure about the British store, but I'm fairly certain Gamestop only lets you return it for full price if it's unopened.
#86 to #61 - lordaurion (01/16/2013) [-]
Gamestop don't give a **** since nothing is wrapped.
User avatar #67 to #61 - Faz (01/16/2013) [-]
In game station you could return it for the equal price of what you bought it in store credit if you had the receipt, so he would get back that £42 to spend on games again...but by throwing away the receipt he screwed himself.

I always get around 60% of what they're selling it for used in the store when I trade a game in.

Hey, guess what? If you're getting **** all cash for your games then they're either old or **** . Gamestop doesn't sell games they pay $5 for $60. It would be $15 at most. Not every used game will be sold, and they need to make a profit.

I traded in the ps3 version of skyrim about a month ago, and i got €20. The game is over a year old. I traded in Super mario 3d land and got €30. But i guess that doesn't make sense when you're retarded and don't understand business.
User avatar #44 to #31 - MotherFuckingTobi (01/16/2013) [-]
mario games retain their value there, bub.
User avatar #39 to #31 - spearpwi (01/16/2013) [-]
Value of the game is not based on how old it is you ******* moron. Have you ever actually spent more than five minutes in one of these shops?
#113 to #39 - jinkazama (01/18/2013) [-]
It's based on how old it is, how popular it is and what condition it is in.
User avatar #59 to #39 - blashyrkh (01/16/2013) [-]
Yes, it is actually. The 3 things that determine how much Gamestop sets the trade in value for on games are age, popularity, and company stock. You are the ******* moron here.
User avatar #26 - Onemanretardpack (01/16/2013) [-]
Don't turn in old games then, ******* retard. I turn in games that I beat within like a week and get like 35 dollars for it. As long as you aren't trying to turn in a game that's like 25 dollars in the store, you're gonna get a good/great deal. Especially if you sign up for the powerup rewards card.

I have a boxed Battletoads.

I should start making prank calls about it and then coming to the store i called with it, turning down the deal because it was too cheap.
#21 - anonymous (01/16/2013) [-]
look at it this way, you buy a brand new game, a day later return it and they give you $20. theyre considering the worst case scenario where the game stays in the store takes up shelf space and price drops eventually to around $20. if they bought it for a higher price theyre risking losing money on it. but these days you have so much access to information about a game on the internet, not to mention renting a game, so if you are hasty enough to drop $60 on a new game without researching it its your own fault.
User avatar #13 - blaisexautopsy (01/16/2013) [-]
I work at Gamestop, it's really not as awful as everyone thinks, say you bought a game, it's an awful game, you have 7 days to return that game if it's from the pre-owned section.
We don't make enough money to give you full price back for the games, we'd be out of business. We do sometimes give you good deals, and also if you use it towards a game or a console, it takes off some money for what you really want.
I dunno, I love working there, and I know a dollar for a game sucks, but we're just trying to stay open. :/
Where else would you rather go, Walmart?
User avatar #25 to #13 - VincentKing ONLINE (01/16/2013) [-]
I just keep my games, otherwise its like throwing away memories.

Only 1 game that I ever returned and thats because it was **** . And I mean that **** that I wouldn't even attempt to play it again... ever

User avatar #54 to #35 - VincentKing ONLINE (01/16/2013) [-]
Some cartoon network fighting game. I got it because I thought "why not, its $20" and then I saw how bad it was.
#20 to #13 - anonymous (01/16/2013) [-]
Dollar a game? Wow you're countrys gamestop sucks. I go to a finnish gamestop and i can get up to 20€ for a game, of course for 20€ it need to be brand new. But let's say i could get about 5€ for lets say borderlands 2(xbox360) or some other game that is new but not brand new. I think the prices are fair. I never get under 2€ for a game that is not older than 2 years.
User avatar #14 to #13 - lostinthemusic (01/16/2013) [-]
Either Walmart or one of the smaller non-corporation game stores in my town.
User avatar #15 to #14 - blaisexautopsy (01/16/2013) [-]
It's just Walmart will sell it to you for the same price as a new game from Gamestop, but they don't take back the games you opened and give you money back for it >.<
I'm just saying is all.
I don't know about your small town game stores to argue with that point.
User avatar #17 to #15 - lostinthemusic (01/16/2013) [-]
Oh I see, you're saying they won't buy games from you.
Well yeah, you've got me there. Although it seems to me like it's kinda hard to get a decent resell on games anywhere.

I'm really not sure, I've always found ways to get good things from Gamestop, and now that I work there it's even better.

I have no clue what you guys are talking about. I recently took in 4 games one was a scratched to hell mw2, bo2, borderlands 1 and re6 with kinect got a little over 100 bucks....

Paid for far cry 3 and the rest of what i had on my reserve of dead space 3

I traded in MW3, MW2 (Contemplated World at War but I decided I loved that game too much), Saint's Row 2, Borderlands 1 and 2 (Played them too much and beat them both with all characters), Infamous 1 and 2, Dead Space 1, Spider-Man Web of Shadows, Battlefield 3 and Skate 3 and got enough to get Skyrim, Saints Row The Third, Batman Arkham City, Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition, and put the rest down on Dead Space 3.

Luckily in my area there are multiple small game shops witch sell new games for about 5 bucks cheaper than Gamestop and give much more for trade's. (One of them almost drove a gamestop store out of business in the same mall as it.)
User avatar #7 - GLJR (01/16/2013) [-]
I use to work at GameStop
The company gives you less than half or slim to nothing for what you even paid for.
And will price it more to make a profit. It really is a gross system in my opinion. But hey it like what Rick says "This is a business." lololol
#106 to #7 - liquidjay (01/16/2013) [-]
Yea, I took a video game design class and watched a short video on media business and how it's always booming. GameStop for instance sells their games at $59.99 and the company will get at least more than 50% of the sells while only the publishers of the game roughly get only 27 or 28 dollars. What's also worse that they don't price match anything. Greedy bastards...but yes, it's business.
#94 to #7 - JHDog (01/16/2013) [-]
i've always wondered this, can employees get discounts on games, or better yet, can you take a game from inventory and pretend it never happend? do they even care?
User avatar #110 to #94 - GLJR (01/17/2013) [-]
We were able to rent games for a week. Then we only could get 20% off. I rented like crazy cause 20% off is nothing.

My friend and I bought a game for 50$, we went home, played it for 20 minutes, and decided the game was **** . We decided we'd go back and return it for a refund the next day.

He said we couldn't even refund us, that you can only refund a game that hasn't been opened, this logic only seemed tangible if someone was returning a gift, and it was useless to me. So he told us we could switch it out for another game instead, but everything else sucked and he just wanted his money back.

So he said "can I just turn it in and get my money back?"
He said the best he would be able to do for us is give us $8, and two games under 20$...

#115 to #114 - jinkazama (01/19/2013) [-]
No. That literally doesn't happen. If it happens to you, then the employees at that one store figured out you were stupid enough and just kept the extra cash for themselves.

Hell, most of the stores have a deal on constantly where you trade in two games that are under a year old and get any new game for them.

Nope, since the company is so big they don't allow things like that. They don't need the extra sales. Each game has a set price on the system, though i believe being in bad condition will lower that price.
#9 to #7 - masterbatey (01/16/2013) [-]
Thats why i dont do "business" with gamestop anymore. I wont buy, trade, or sell with those bastards ever again. Their cheap ways has lost them my business for life and I tell everyone I can not to go to gamestop. **** gamestop.

Dynasty warriors isn't that popular. Neither is gundam. And it was a licensed game for a series. It was practically guaranteed to be **** and sell **** all. That is why you got next to nothing for it.

Right when you leave the store, you just know they are putting a $49.99 Used sticker on all the games you sold them for $6...
#6 to #2 - jakeattack (01/16/2013) [-]
here is an idea, dont sell them to gamestop. they need to make a profit, so being the greedy ******** they are, they make the most profit they can without caring about fairness. if you wanna get money for old games try to find people to buy them. someone who wants to buy it will pay decent money, likely less than what they could get at gamestop, but still better than what you would get. unless they are dumbasses, charge em $50. but still try finding someone to buy it personaly first
#3 to #2 - anonymous (01/15/2013) [-]
I can only agree. I've had this problem be for. I took back several games and walked away with maybe $5 a game. It's such a rip off. Especially when you paid $40+ for the game originally.
