I believe a customer should just be allowed to tip what they wish depending on the service they receive. If people complain about low tips, work harder perhaps?
User avatar #104 to #69 - happypancake (01/16/2013) [-]
I heard there are some restaurants (owned by insanely rich people) which allow you to pay as much or as little as you want for your meal, depending on the quality of service or food. Apparently you can also just help out with the dishes. Sounds awesome.

I customer IS allowed to tip whatever he feels like?

some places add 10% as standard in the UK, they put it in really small print on the menu and you have to ask specifically for it to be removed if you want.
User avatar #88 to #76 - fireprincess (01/16/2013) [-]
At some places a tip is included in the bill.

So... Before today I didn't know that " ****** tipper" was an insult...
I'm glad in the UK Waiters and waitresses are paid properly.
A friend of mine in Glasgow actually makes quite a lot as a waitress, she gets above minimum wage and quite a lot in tips at the end of each week... Since tips are gathered and then shared out at the end of each week. (by hours worked etc)
It's quite a competitive job to get actually, because students like it, and other young people.

Where I live, tipping is highly voluntary. Tip is never included in the bill.

I really don't get all the "dude you're a ****** tipper" posts.
User avatar #53 to #46 - spoonless (01/16/2013) [-]
Tipping's only really a big deal in the states, I suppose because salaries must be low for waiting/bar-tending jobs? I've lived in Europe, Asia, and the Middle-East, there's no where near as much pressure to tip in any of those places as there is in the US.
User avatar #68 to #53 - Maroon (01/16/2013) [-]
Yeah, well thanks to ******** labor laws, hourly salary for servers is well below minimum wage because of circular logic that servers don't need as much hourly because they get tip so it turns the money that is supposed to be extra into money that they need just to get by.
User avatar #71 to #68 - spoonless (01/16/2013) [-]
Who the **** thinks up these laws...?

In America, you have to give an extra tip to the person who served you all night. This is because of the wages, which are very low. This way the people whom work in a restaurant make a little extra money.
User avatar #48 to #47 - toxictacolatta (01/16/2013) [-]
The wages are below minimum wage, but its not mandatory to tip, but not tipping is frowned upon because of the low wage, practically because without you, they're nothing.

Where I live, minimum wage for jobs with no tips is $7.70... With tips it's $3.85. If they serve you food without spit in it I think they deserve a tip.
#38 to #28 - anonymous (01/16/2013) [-]
Why should I give them money for their work?
But if they're nice enough I give them a 20
User avatar #120 to #38 - coolcalx (01/16/2013) [-]
because they're wage isn't proportional to the amount of work they do.

their salary is based on the idea that you WILL tip them, so if you don't, you're sort of robbing them, in a way.
User avatar #27 to #17 - jtwagner (01/16/2013) [-]
Wait staff minimum wage is $2.30 on average. The tip is supposed to "equal out" to minimum wage.

I remember reading somewhere that in some American schools, they teach that pi is exactly 4 because kids shouldn't be expected to count in anything other than whole numbers. O' course, I know that isn't true, but hey a book's a book.

I remember reading somewhere that in some swedish schools, they teach that sex with pickled fish is ok because kids shouldn't be expected to have relationships with actual people. O' course, I know that isn't true, but hey a book's a book.
#50 to #45 - anonymous (01/16/2013) [-]
In an American school I was taught pie was about 3.14, It goes on infinitely but 3.14 is as close as you need to get. I know up to 7 digits in pi including the the 3...

TL;DR: Get better sources

Note the word 'some'.

I wouldn't be surprised, in Canada and the US they're babying us to the point of actually making us less smart in a lot of ways.
#145 to #92 - anonymous (01/16/2013) [-]
Essentially to actually learn anything in the states you should either go to a private school or test in to advanced classes which isn't hard at all. Regular classes seem to cater to the lowest common denominator while advanced classes are for anyone with half a brain.
#156 to #145 - anonymous (01/16/2013) [-]
Unfortunately, my anonymous brother, even the advanced classes are still dropped to the lowest common denominator, it just happens to be higher than the common classes.
