I think it's a Papilio Aegeus caterpillar or an Orchard Swallowtail, and yes they are Australian but I don't think they can kill you, they just release a bright red osmeterium (those horns) releasing a smell of citrus to drive predators away.

I'm going to assume that instead of solid horns those spikey looking things are actually just like little erections pointing out of it's head. Filled with blood pumped into them.
As a display to warn off predators instead of a weapon.
Just the way they pop up, and seem to bend and move with the wind.

I don't know what the proper term for this would be, so erections is what you're getting.

They're called osmeteria, a gland which produces chemicals that repulse the caterpillars enemies when it feels threatened.
Are usually common with caterpillars of the Swallowtail Butterfly family.
