So how do you explain pepper spraying immobile, unresisting protesters sitting on the ground after being arrested.
User avatar #134 to #94 - defeats (01/12/2013) [-]
What do you mean "explain"? Do you mean "justify"?

But okay, I'll explain it for you, a bunch of students were protesting something, because that's what children do, and everyone under 25 is still a child these days.
They were shouting at the police officers who' orders were to control this mob, most of them campus security who don't have training with a riot.
When some annoying kids were sitting on some steps blocking something, one of these campus security guys sprayed them with pepper spray when they wouldn't move.

you're acting like the pepper spray is going to kill them, all police officers have to train in the event that it's used on them, in the military it was used on me in training exercises.

The guy was fired anyway, even though a panel decided he acted accordingly to the rules of engagement that were set for him.

I go to school in Tennessee and I have friend who is black, let's call him Rob. Rob works his ass of every god damn day to succeed academically. He's very smart, but he's not one of the genius types who can walk into to any class and sleep the entire time and make A's. He has to work for it. I watch Rob ******* dedicate his life to school work, and he's rewarded. He makes A's in honor classes, AP classes which is pretty ******* challenging because of the semi-dysfunctional teachers at our school. And guess what? He's still a pretty ******* pleasant person to be around. He doesn't bitch about school work the way the rest of us do, I always see him upbeat and excited and just all around a ******* awesome person to be friends with. Rob has rightfully earned mine and everyone else's respect.

And then I see this ******* post. It's degrading, dismissive. And I rage. Why? Because no matter how hard Rob works, no matter how much effort Rob puts into being an outstanding citizen, there will always be people like you who have the inability to appreciate him as a person. Just because he looks a certain way.

#77 to #62 - BLOONMOON (01/12/2013) [-]
I want to believe that sort of thought, but you try going up to a black person and see if you can use the word " ****** " on them when they act ********* and see how they react. As much as I would want the word to be meaning just a person who is disliked by all, it will forever be stained by racism. To TRY to get the word to mean completely something else than what its have been for the past 200+ years would be ridiculous. But really, try saying that to the next black person you see in public and use the word ****** to describe somebody. I can bet you it won't be so smooth.

User avatar #27 to #18 - coolcalx (01/12/2013) [-]
"the point it proves is true"

um, no, because this comic is a strict strawman logical fallacy. A logically flawed argument cannot prove anything (the assumption could be true, but if the logic attempting to prove it is faulty, then it has proved nothing)

User avatar #28 to #27 - desuforeverlulz (01/12/2013) [-]
It is not a strawman but rather a hyperbole. I can see why you'd assume it is a strawman however.

A strawman is a fallacy from attacking an argument that the opponent doesn't hold. This comic here applies to the black community, but in a limited way. The artist is exaggerating the portrayal of his point for comedic effect rather than illustrating how he really thinks the black community feels about brutality.
User avatar #29 to #28 - coolcalx (01/12/2013) [-]
that's basically what a strawman argument is. you take the argument, and you distort it, exaggerate it, and misrepresent it so that it appears that you've refuted something, when in reality, you haven't. you've just invented something, and refuted it.
User avatar #40 to #29 - hydraetis (01/12/2013) [-]
So basically it's the exact same thing that religious extremists do?
#51 to #40 - coolcalx (01/12/2013) [-]
why would you draw a distinction between religious extremists and nonreligious extremists? both groups are ridiculous.

sounds like you're trying to start an argument, but I'm not interested in dealing with that. I have a chocolate yoohoo, and I'm gonna drink the **** out of it and relax.

User avatar #32 to #29 - desuforeverlulz (01/12/2013) [-]

maybe so
User avatar #31 to #29 - desuforeverlulz (01/12/2013) [-]

I think you accidentally your sentence.

but no, I disagree.

here's what I'm reading from (I'm not an expert on logical fallacies. there may be another one that fits this case better. I do know that this is some form of logical fallacy, but I'm not 100% on specifically which one)

I'm sorry, and I'm not trying to start an argument, but if you run, they're going to take you down. It's not a matter of race or bigotry in most cases; They need to make sure the criminals stay down, and they're not going to give them another chance to run. I'll admit, it was slightly excessive, but he already had a criminal record for robbery, and he had collided with an officer after the car chase, where he shook off two hits from tasers, and then repeatedly attempted to stand back up. He made mistakes, and it cost him.
User avatar #90 to #12 - rhetoricalfunny ONLINE (01/12/2013) [-]
******** , people weren't against it because they did it. But because it was excessive, there was absolutely no need to brutalize him beyond recognition. (hyperbole for the ******** who think I'm serious.)

the police officers were way in the wrong on that case. There is no way police brutality like that should be tolerated. It's like the argument of girls deserving to be raped when they dress provocatively
