Anyone can take the best of a genre and the worst of another to make a bias opinion like what you have done.

I made that picture.

It all looks good written. But, when you actually listen to the songs, the instruments are so distorted and the singer screams so much that you can't understand anything.

Hegg actually sings pretty damn clear.

Personally, I can understand the lyrics to Fate of the Norns quite easily. It's a song about the death of a child, if the singer sung perfectly, it'd have no emotion to it.

This is rap.
Very useful for future use.

This is just a personal pet peeve of mine but it really annoys me when people don't differentiate between hip hop and rap. rap is the vocal style, hip hop is the genre. furthermore this is clearly biased and inaccurate and written by either a teenager who thinks rock is the only good genre because he doesn't enjoy others.
Let me now explain how there is good in every genre.
Hip hop: (Beware - Death Grips)
And I know soon come my time
For in mine void a pale horse burns
But I fear not the time I'm taken
Past the point of no return.
Pop: (Wayfaring Stranger - Ed Sheeran)
I am a poor, wayfaring stranger
Traveling through this world alone
And there's no sickness, toil, or danger
In that bright line to which I go
Rock: I'll stick with the one OP posted; rise against are a pretty good band.
Emo: (Enter By the Narrow Gates - Circle Takes The Square)
These dreams of Thunder displace,
Dismantled spirit's burnt bare-
Sylphs in the shards resounding,
"Open to the Field!"
Metal: (The Art of Dying - Gojira)
Neglected emotions lead to catastrophic voyage on the other side
I have been given so much stress and lack of confidence
I've been given the gift of so small hope deep inside
I haven't closed my eyes in a long time, I am trying
Country: I'll be honest, I don't listen to much country. But if anyone does can you post some lyrics to complete my comment?
User avatar #605 to #541 - rainfire (01/07/2013) [-]
It's the stereotypical version of them all, except rock. I personally don't like most modern music, but instead I listen to most country and rock music from the 1900s and hip hop from the 90s.

Thank you for posting this! Even though I lean towards the rock / metal side of music (My favorite bands are Five Finger Death Punch and Within Temptation) I have lately been venturing into the country side, and I have found many great songs!
One of my favorites is Eli Young Band - Even if It Breaks Your Heart

Way back on the radio dial
A fire got lit inside a bright eyed child
Every note just wrapped around his soul
From steel guitars to Memphis
All the way to rock n roll.

I can hear em singing
Keep on dreaming even if it breaks your heart
Some dreams stay with you forever
Drag you round and bring you back to where you were
Some dreams keep on getting better
Gotta keep believing if you wanna know for sure

Another good Popular country song is

Country: Something To Be Proud Of - Montgomery Gentry
That's something to be proud of
That's a life you can hang your hat on
That's a chin held high as the tears fall down
A gut sucked in, a chest stuck out
Like a small town flag a-flyin'
Or a newborn baby cryin'
In the arms of the woman that you love
That's something to be proud of

Country/Folk: (Anaïs Mitchell - Epic pt. II)

Heavy and hard is the heart of the king
King of iron, king of steel
The heart of the king loves everything
Like the hammer loves the nail
But the heart of a man is a simple one
Small and soft, flesh and blood
And all that it loves is a woman
A woman is all that it loves
And Hades is king of the scythe and the sword
He covers the world in the color of rust
He scrapes the sky and scars the earth
And he comes down heavy and hard on us
But even that hardest of hearts unhardened
Suddenly when he saw her there
Persephone in her mother’s garden
Sun on her shoulders, wind in her hair
The smell of the flowers she held in her hand
And the pollen that fell from her fingertips
And suddenly Hades was only a man
With a taste of nectar upon his lips

TL;DR:
Rap is a vocal style not a genre. OP is a biased fag who only listens to his dad's old records and doesn't understand how other genres can also be good. Followed by a list of artists and the lyrics to their songs.

Also sorry it's all so compact but I reached the limit for line gaps.

Well, i'm not a music enthusiast then... problem solved, doesn't mean you have to lower people who primarily like rock down to the level of 12 year olds who think CoD is better than Sonic or somesuch state of mind.

Well I don't think generalizing is a bad thing, but I do recognize that rap does have it's gems, and even things like dubstep can be useful when applied as background music in a videogame, but generally I find rap to be about scoring all dem honeys down at da club... at least country is listenable.

The problem is not that someone only enjoys a single genre (in this case, rock).

The problem is to dismiss all other genres simply on the fact that you like something else better.

Yeah, you're right. Probably about 10% of rap is in my opinion artistic or poetic/worth listening to since the lyric is pretty much the primary reason to listen rap. But since there's such a gigantic amount of rap music being produced, that 10% is still a huge amount of music that you could probably listen to solely and still have a vast variety of music to listen to day to day. It just takes a bit of digging. The mainstream projection of any genre is never a good place to start.

There's nothing wrong with only liking one genre, but there is something wrong with being an intolerable 12 year old.
