District 9... That is all

We have nothing that any alien civilization would need, besides a colonizable planet, but if there were indeed a space-faring race looking for a planet to colonize it wouldn't happen like a holocaust, they would probably go about it like the Europeans did the Native Americans. It would probably be cheaper for them to find another habitable planet with no sentient species living on it. Another thing to consider, if aliens did come, they would probably be some sort of corporation, not gov't looking to profit off the earth. All we would have to do is fight long enough for Earth to no longer be deemed a profitable venture. Alien invasion portrayed in the movies is very unlikely.
#103 to #72 - narlex (01/07/2013) [-]
Or they have a completely different morality to us and habitable planets aren't needed for them; they might just go around tossing destructive weapons around like matchsticks and watching as we burn.
#110 to #103 - xxxgnipsxxx (01/07/2013) [-]
Yeah but I think if they did have that kind of morality they would have never gotten off their world. Look at us, we try to be ok and we can't even get off this rock. The only way any civilization could discover FTL would be for a society that doesn't view war as it's primary objective, as we do now.
#117 to #110 - narlex (01/07/2013) [-]
War can be a good motivator for a species, if you have your society united behind an idea then they can work together on finding ways to destroy stuff. Didn't we get a lot of our technology during wartime, Radar and stuff? Or their species could not be built on individuals like ours is.
#118 to #117 - xxxgnipsxxx (01/07/2013) [-]
another good thought, you may be right, one thing though I don't see how FTL technology would be a reasonable tactical advantage over an enemy on your planet.
#120 to #118 - narlex (01/07/2013) [-]
FTL can be an exceptionally useful tactical tool in a war. Usually though in a war across multiple systems though depending on your method of arrival, you will be ahead of the lightspeed barrier so the advantage of surprise is on your side.
#131 to #120 - xxxgnipsxxx (01/07/2013) [-]
Oh of course I totally agree with that, I was referring to like a species fighting amongst itself on it's home planet before the advent of FTL. It would be like the allies discovering FTL during wwII, there just isn't a huge tactical advantage for it for the amount of resources it would take to create. Kind of a weird example but you get the drift.

Or maybe earth is just a big zoo.
#112 to #75 - xxxgnipsxxx (01/07/2013) [-]
that's a weird thought, kind of reminds me of that episode of doctor who where the earth is a big reality tv show for them.

Alien's have the technology to appear as ghost to us. Invisible and the device also allows some objects to pass through them.

Retry on my fail comment. People who make the movie wants it to be in their home country. If you watch any Japanese alien movies they are in Japan for example.

Well, if there is extra-terrestrial life out there that would seek to destroy us, enslave us or what have you, the most logical course of action would be to eliminate the greatest military threat on this world first. I mean, they have the element of surprise, so they would want to use that to their greatest advantage. Besides, no intelligent life form would come in, guns blazing, without gathering any information or data on the race they're attacking. It's just not plausible. They would analyze our world, and quickly understand that the greatest opposition to them, if any, would undoubtedly come from the U.S.

Also, when we consider the premises that most of the sci-fi stories are built around, it's even more logical for the foreign invaders to pacify the States.

Alternatively, the aliens would just be so powerful that they couldn't care less about the dispersion of military power around the world, as nothing we have would stand a chance against them. They would then just land wherever, **** **** up and do what they want before quickly being on their merry way. There are some stories that build themselves around this scenario as well, so you are incorrect in your assumption, OP. And what about Doctor Who, one of the biggest sci-fi franchises out there? The bad guys in that story always seem to find their way to England, but who cares? It's good sci-fi.

I really don't see why you would care if the story takes place in the States, OP. Political agenda, much?

TL;DR: It actually is the most logical course of action for aliens to take, especially considering the premises that most sci-fi stories orient themselves around. But who cares anyway? If it's good sci-fi, it's good sci-fi.

In my opinion the greatest power in the world is the UN, destroying that or the G8 meetings would result in an even more horrible ********* !
User avatar #135 to #70 - goldenglimmer (01/07/2013) [-]
You definitely have a point, but the UN is run by multiple magical fairy princessistrations making a lot less effective. Bureaucracies dude, gums everything up. Of course, I'm no expert. None of us can really say with certainty what course of action these hypothetical aliens would take, hehe :)

In addition, the UN headquarters is in New York, which is in the States (inb4 you don't say.jpg).

But thumb for you for pointing out a flaw in my argument.
User avatar #138 to #135 - englishfag (01/07/2013) [-]

I think Invaders would have their eyes at Japan and China.

japan has no military and china makes cheep goods not necessary ones. but xcom is amazing
#33 - mattkingg **User deleted account** (01/07/2013) [-]
That really doesn't bother me, i mean as long as it's the hostile ones that land there it's less **** for us to deal with

besides from what i've seen of our movies, any aliens that land in england are either friendly or get the **** beaten out of them by chavs
