Talk about how Guns kill people..

Poor misunderstood guns..
User avatar #461 - thatoneiranianguy ONLINE (01/06/2013) [-]
Let me just say this to all the people that are for gun control....you're pretty ignorant and you need the following education:

AR-15s, or any automatic rifle look-alikes are NOT Assault Rifles. Assault Rifles are, rifles that fire and intermediate cartridge, uses detachable magazines of any kind (banana mags, stanags, round drums, box mags w/e), and (here's the important part.) has SELECTIVE FIRE. Which means it must be able to fire semi-automatic and 3 round burst OR fully automatic.

So, by that standard, AR-15s are not FAs (Full Autos.) They typically use an intermediate cartridge, they use a detachable magazine, but they DO NOT have selective fire.

Now that I've got that point across, as for assault rifles in general. There is already a tight control on FA firearms (aswell as many other 'scary' guns.) This was taken care of in the National Firearms Act of 1934:
[url deleted]

Also, you can not purchase or sell full auto weapons made after 1986 but you can sell and purchase those that are made before 1986:
[url deleted]

In order to actually acquire a full auto, you have to pay the amounted price of the rifle or parts kit, and then pay a nice penny on its tax stamp, and then you go through I believe a vigorous 6th month waiting period filling out paperwork and going through background checks conducted by the ATF.

In order to build your own full auto firearm you must basically go through the same procedure but you have to have a Class III license.
User avatar #468 to #461 - paintbucket (01/06/2013) [-]
transferable machine guns have to have been registered before, i think 1986
most transferable guns are over 20,000$ now.

you can't build a FA gun without a class 3 manufacturer's license, and then it can only be sold to class 3 dealers as a 'dealer sample'.

Have you ever been to a shooting range where you shot hundreds of rounds throughout the day? If you have you would know how much of a pain it becomes to have to load 1 or 2 mags over and over again. Therefore people including myself have multiple or high cap. magazines. So you spend less time loading and more time having fun.

Im for an AR ban. Every other gun has a logical purpose, shotgun being small game; pistol small game; and rifle big game. If you use an AR for hunting it would be like using steroids for a sport, it takes the fairness and the fun out of the game. Plus, why the hell can civilians buy body armor? What the fuck is that all about. If you buy body armor that means you thinking you are going to be shot at...
#509 to #384 - devout feminist (01/06/2013) [-]
While I usually shy away from internet arguments, against my better judgement and with all due respect, I'll throw in my 2 cents.

The AR-15 is chambered for the .223 Remington cartridge, which in terms of ballistics, is pretty much a glorified .22LR round. It was designed to wound a 150 to 200-pound man, while the round used hunting rifles, such as the .308 or .30-06 were designed to kill 200 to 250-pound deer. Talking the AR-15 up as some super death cannon doesn't really make much sense.

Regarding body armor, first of all, it's pretty expensive; like, you could by a new Glock for the same price as a kevlar vest. Second, saying civilians don't need it because they won't get shot at is a bit contradictory to saying we need to ban guns because everyone is getting shot at.

User avatar #507 to #384 - whaawhaa (01/06/2013) [-]
You are aware the AR-15 is not that powerful of a rifle it shoots a .223 which is a .22 cal round. In many states they wont allow you to hunt with deer with that round because it isn't strong enough sometimes and has been known to skip off of a deers breast plate.
User avatar #410 to #384 - eight (01/06/2013) [-]
Assault Rifles are largely already regulated and consist of around 1% of the gun owning population. The bill proposed is trying to ban a large amount of SEMI Auto weapons...
Any semi automatic weapon that has at least one military characteristic (down from 2).
Any semi automatic weapon that has a magazine capacity of more than 10 rounds.
Mind you semi automatic covers nearly all weapons owned by gun owners in the US. This covers Pistols, Shotguns, Hunting Rifles and sports weapons like the AR - 15
And to add to the above, ALL weapons holders are REQUIRED to register all of their firearms (Something Hitler made gun owners do before he took over Germany).
User avatar #376 - eight (01/06/2013) [-]
Gonna laugh my ass off in the future if guns are banned and then either the country is invaded or the government becomes oppressive and then everyone complains that they can't fight for their lives without guns.

Considering this was posted under stoner-humor, It was a joke more than a provocation. Anyway, the US has had a long going gun culture, something which I highly doubt will change. You could impose as strict gun control laws as you want - people just won't hand over guns they already own. More than likely they'll take it as a governmental violation of the 2nd amendment to the bill of rights and cause widespread rebellion.

Hate on the US gun culture all you want, it's not going away. Any sensible gun owner only uses them for recreation (hunting, etc). and for defense if need be. It's the crazy people, the people who don't care anymore, and the people without common sensibilities that use the guns for killing and murder. We need a better educational system and promote work ethic and friendships and all that social stuff; not just control the guns.

TL;DR US gun control will likely never happen (so long as it remains the US); just enjoy the content.

Question to those wo are against gun laws in the US: I can understand that you want to carry a firearm to protect yourself and/or your family. But why does any citizen need an assault rifle meant for warfare and massive killing? Why can anyone be opposed against forbidding the assault rifles?
User avatar #341 to #308 - WHATTHEPISSTRAINE (01/06/2013) [-]
an AR 15 isnt an assult rifle, they are talking about banning whats called assult weapons, Semi auto weapons that looks like the real thing while Full auto weapons can still be legally traded and purchased through class III dealers and paying the class III taxes, Now a good example of how idiotic this law would be... a Bushmaster AR would have to have its pistol grip removed and plastics changed over to Wood to make it "less dangerous" thats like painting a stick of dynamite blue to make it seem less threatening.
User avatar #375 to #341 - SognaVetr (01/06/2013) [-]
I'm not talking about an AR 15 in particular. I'm just talking in general: If they banned all assault rifles and allowed only handguns for safety measures, I can't see how anyone can oppose to it.And also, if that really is the new law, than it's shittier than the current one.
User avatar #422 to #375 - WHATTHEPISSTRAINE (01/06/2013) [-]
Well simple fact is sale of new Assult rifles (FULL AUTO RIFLES) and other machineguns is completely illegal. an AR 15 is not an assult rifle in any form, its a semi auto rifle, Like many hunting and almost all target rifles. An assult weapons ban only bans scary looking weapons regardless of function. and Believe me, most gun crimes in the US are based around pistols anyway, much easier to carry around and hide than a rifle.
#398 to #375 - wilhamlin ONLINE (01/06/2013) [-]
I don't think you get his point. You seem to think that all rifles are assault rifles (brought on by your point "banned all assault rifles and allowed only handguns") which is not the case.

Assault rifles are rifles that have burst fire or fully automatic switches. These, although not 100% illegal, are difficult to obtain and very expensive to obtain a license for, so it is very unlikely that you see very many actual assault rifles unless you look for them.
#380 to #375 - devout feminist (01/06/2013) [-]
handguns for recreational hunting are less efficient and less satisfying
User avatar #325 to #308 - graydiggy ONLINE (01/06/2013) [-]
Because an AR-15 is not an assault rifle. Yes, it looks like one, but it is not.

An assault rifle will have, semi auto+3 round burst, 3 round burst or full auto alone.

An AR-15 is only semi auto unless the bolt is illegally modified. It is a cosmetically modified hunting rifle. It functions no different than say the Browning BAR autoloader. That weapon is a semi auto hunting rifle not to be confused with the BAR select-fire military weapon that served the US Army as the standard rifle squad light machine gun in the Second World War. They are completely different weapons. Just like the AR-15 and the M-4 are completely different.
User avatar #351 to #325 - paintbucket (01/06/2013) [-]
i would say modifying an AR-15 to fire full auto is difficult and takes a lot of skilled labor.
i know this because of reasons.

User avatar #531 to #320 - whaawhaa (01/07/2013) [-]
But when half the country owns guns 150,000,000 vs our total military force of 1-2 million I say civilians would do fine.
User avatar #654 to #531 - SognaVetr (01/07/2013) [-]
You really think in case of a civil war the entire population would join a militia? If you are lucky, 5% will, the rest will run, hide, seek asylum etc. Not even speaking about the great number of people who would join the government's side out of pure fear.
User avatar #337 to #320 - thenukecity (01/06/2013) [-]
The point of the second amendment was just that. In case of something like this happening, the people can fight back. Of course at the time everyone had muskets so the odds were more even. You have to realize that the second amendment was made before the invention of fully automatic weapons.
User avatar #377 to #337 - SognaVetr (01/06/2013) [-]
You are saying that the second amendment is outdated yourself and therefore needs to be updated. If It were me, id' change it to "every citizen has the right to carry a handgun for safety measures, and are oblied to take at least x hours of lessons in safety first". Seems reasonable to me.
User avatar #399 to #377 - thenukecity (01/06/2013) [-]
I'm not saying the second amendment is outdated. What I'm saying is that the odds were stacked more evenly back then. 2 guys holding muskets are equal. A civilian with an AR and a soldier with an AR aren't.
