It makes me cringe when people are like, OH MY FUCKING GREAT AUNTIES SISTER IN-LAW WAS SCOTTISH SO HERE'S MY TARTAN.
Born and raised in western Scotland
ACTUALLY SCOTTISH.

My dad moved from edinburgh to australia when he was twelve and we have a family legacy dating back 500 years, including a direct link to famed scottish pirate Alexander Selkirk, the basis of Robinson Cruse and gulliver's travels. My parents were on holiday when it happened.

The main point is, lots of scots have LOADS of family history, they can tell you lots of SCOTTISH stories told by their SCOTTISH grandparents and them before them, they have an accent, detailed version of scotlands traditions and culture and then suddenly you have all these Americans or whatever popping up like
herder my family 10 million years ago was scottish.
You all do it to the Irish too.

And I have a relation to Nathan Bedford Forrest but I don't go bragging about it everywhere. I just don't see the point, why would you care about stuff traced back that far? If I was born and raised in Australia, I'd be a proud Aussie. The same with America.

Okay fair enough, I meant many in the comments farther down.
But it all depends, do you actually embrace that heritage? Is it still in your blood line or is it far gone by now? I just hate americans that are like IM SCOTTISH GERMAN IRISH ITALIAN AND A TEENY BIT OF FRENCH and then turn round to me like, lol why do your men wear skirts, whats a keilidh, whats haggis.

I love scotland as much, if not more than australia, I own land there, I have a thick accent that I've had to take years of speech therapy for, and I collect pocket watches that have to have something to do with scotland.
I've always called myself scottish, and am extremely proud to do so, so I'm asking an actual scottish born person if I can identify myself as one. That's all.

If you have the accent why not, did you get speech therapy to make you scottish though? wut lol. you're speaking to a Glaswegian by the way.. Most people here are more proud of being a bunch of cunts than being Scottish.
Do you actually live here though? Have you ever been? Loads of things count.

No, when I was younger, my accent was so heavy that I had to get speech therapy to numb it down so my teachers could understand me properly. It took five and a half years, and it's still the first thing people ask me about when I meet them.
I wouldn't think you are Scottish. If you were born in Australia you could say Scottish-Australian.
But the accent, well... I live in France currently, and I have a few English speaking friends, one in particular (is French, born and raised) has an English mother and he speaks English with a perfect accent, but he is still a cheese eating surrender monkey (Frenchman).
I would generally Identify ones race by the country in which they were born.
Your parents give you ethnicity, such that a person born in America to African parents is American, but is identified as African-American.
I was born in the Southern General hospital in Glasgow, my parents are Scottish, and all my Grandparents are Scottish, so I know I am, but I do have Irish heritage in there somewhere... My last name is also Doyle...

It pisses me off so much. I used to hate therapy because I actually got picked on for it and it made me think there was something wrong with me. I still, at age 21, have to repeat myself two or three times for people to understand me properly.
Yes, you scottish are a mean bunch.
YOU JUST MADE AN ENEMY FOR LIFE.

Im a revolutionary war buff and finding this all out makes me happier than a fat girlwith a life time supply of ice cream....
