I don't want to sound like a dick, but the above anonymous is wrong.
I am an English teacher.

We use the article "a", as in "a book", when the word that comes after "a" begins a CONSONANT SOUND. Not necessarily a consonant. For example "a uniform". The "u" in "uniform" makes the sound of "you".

This brings us to the article "an". When the word that follows "an" begins with a VOWEL SOUND we use "an". For example, "an apple". Just because a word begins with a vowel does not mean it has a vowel sound. For example, "an hour". "Hour" begins with H yet the sound that we say is pronounced as "our".

Conclusion: "a" is for words that follow with a consonant sound.
"an" is for words that follow with begin with a vowel sound.

For the word Homunculus we use "a" not "an" because the H is pronounced thus it begins with a consonant sound.
