Maybe it's the soothing music mixed with the fact that nothing's happening. I'm at the part right after the main character has lunch with peg-legs & armless-artist.

My advice is skip Kenji. His humour is my thing either, and generally going into act 3 will accomplish your happiness. You might want to avoid Rin for a while, she's so boring and somewhat of a mediocre storyline compared to the others.. Blah. Just wait till act 3 and try Lily/Hana storylines, they are quite sweet and fluffy if a bit cliche.

A manga doesn't have to be action. It can be a slice of life like Azumanga Daioh. It's just that they took a 100% normal/boring/everyday story with nothing really much going on but made them all disabled just to make it edgy like that compensates for everything.
