Some people just like to overburden themselves with work. Engineering with a religious studies major, perhaps?

Or the university may very well require general education electives to make their graduates "well-rounded" and allow them to expand their minds instead of focusing on just their major. I'm an electrical engineering student and took calc, eng courses, history of western civ, and sociology too meet my requirements.

Generally it stands for satisfactory. I do not know why they would give it as a final grade though. These are reserved for midterms most of the time...

I hadn't either until I went to the college I am at.. It seems to me like it is a way for lazy teachers not to calculate actual grades.

Fair enough. And I live in england and I don't think that we have an 'S' grade for A levels

Some classes are a pass/no pass instead of a letter grade, it could be a variation of that. You are either satisfactory or unsatisfactory

credit cap can be surpassed if you show that you have references and convince dean that you are a hard worker.
