The controversy is when a Christmas tree is placed on public land. The use of a christian symbol endorses a specific religion, therefore violating the establishment clause of the first amendment.

If anyone is interested let me tell you the story of the christmas tree. On the 25th december in 800 A.D Charles the Great (aka Charlemagne) was crowned emperor in the basilica of st. Peter in Rome, large trees were brought into the basilica itself. They were decorated with gold and silver to honor the coronation... That is where the tradition of decorating a tree at christmas began.

To deal with stupidity like this you must baffle the stupid people. My favorite way is to tell them that i'm and atheist and that the "Christmas tree" is a Pagan traditions that was stolen by the Christian church. This usually gives me enough time to get away before they can figure out what I just said.

Newsflash... only American atheists got a problem with Christmas Trees.

in addition, it's not even originally a christian tradition, it's a pagan one, Americans celebrate it because of immigrants from Germany / Scandinavia.

I'm an anti-theist, I actively proclaim that not only do I not believe in anything but science, but also that religion is bad for the world. But even I like Christmas trees, have a lamp of the north star, and like the gold angel my mother usually puts on top of our Christmas tree -> in our completely atheist family.

My girlfriend is catholic though, she hates Christmas decorations.

I have never met an atheist here in Denmark who thought Christmas trees should be banned because they were promoting religious ideas. And 80% of... well everyone, says they haven't got a faith.

Christmas used to be a Pagan holiday...

...and then the Christians brutally murdered them for being "witches." Goddammit religion.

Fact: Christmas trees were first used by peasants as an offering to Santa Claus in the hopes he would not kidnap their children to be used as elf laborers.

BUT CHRISTMAS TREES DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH CHRISTIAN SYMBOLISM.

So, no cross necklaces. No Star of David tattoos (I've seen a lot). People just need to suck it up and deal. Most stores can't even say "Merry Christmas" because people get offended, so I make a point to say it to the customers that come into my work. Should we outlaw Independence Day, because it might offend people? Valentine's Day offends single people. Halloween offends people. Thanksgiving. Veteran's Day. Hell, I'm pretty sure people could get offended by Mother's Day. I will not be politically correct with what I say or do because I might offend someone. If you don't like a holiday, don't celebrate it. It's not that hard.

Isn't the idea of having a tree inside your house originally to embrace having nature in your residence? That's what I was told (please don't kill me if I'm wrong)

The idea of having decorating evergreens started by celebrating the continuing of life through the winter because evergreens don't drop their leaves. This eventually turned into the Christmas tree.

or something like that
