I'm not quite sure.. But at the moment, Lenovo laptops seem to be a very good choice for university. Tossing the idea of having a mac or apple into the bin to the side.

Lenovo's are great for business and school. The problem is that it can't run simple games. The graphic drivers couldn't even run minecraft.
User avatar #114 - neutralgray (12/04/2012) [-]
Is the joke the amount of Apple laptops or the excessive amount of people looking like they're enjoying themselves in the latter image?

If the first, I can relate, If the second, I'd love to know where you go to college because no one here has "fun" in the classroom.

at my university,
there's only 3 females in my graduating class in computer science.
I sit in the back, so the wall is to my back.
And I have a female in front, to my left and to my right.
Now if only I could strike up a conversation.

University of Missouri is the bottom picture. The Journalism School there has a deal with Apple that allows them to exclusively use their computers for their Journalism courses in return for cheaper prices on their equipment, both for the school and the students. I think its also there to help make it easier when sharing information and what not but that seemed a little far fetch. If you don't end up getting an Apple computer they can flunk/hold you back from the Journalism School courses until you do.

Eh a lot of other schools, and places of business do this, hell even most doctor's offices do this with pills. They still sell other computers, so its technically not a monopoly of any sort. It just means that school would rather pony up the money to make a base line for what the need the rather have to go to the process of trying to get everything to work with every possible computer/os that people bring in.

people in my class dont pull out their laptops during lectures.
and we'd usually do both lectures and exercises at the Computer Labs, so no real need for laptops..
They do use laptops during free periods tho.

Macs do have a lot going for them, especially for video editing, graphic design or similiar things.
User avatar #80 to #65 - alyosha ONLINE (12/04/2012) [-]
Except for the fact that you can get better software for a cheaper price on a Windows machine which is itself several thousand dollars cheaper than the Mac. But if you like shooting money out of a firehose...go nuts!
User avatar #88 to #80 - thelonelyfeel (12/04/2012) [-]
My brother went to college for graphic design and they gave him a $2,000 mac that can do **** my desktop can't possibly do. He runs windows on it.
User avatar #91 to #88 - alyosha ONLINE (12/04/2012) [-]
I don't want to fight over his, but that's purely subjective. A modern Mac will outmatch a '98 Gateway simply because time has passed. Macs generally do run smoothly and Windows machines that aren't taken care of properly will bog down with malware. Just because one Mac is superior to one PC doesn't necessarily mean much of anything. Statistically, across the board for every model you can get in every price range, Macs are **** compared to Windows machines available at a much cheaper price.

Also, $2,000 is a lot of money. Did your desktop cost anywhere near that? Sounds like you're comparing apples to oranges.

Take this is consideration: I had a macbook pro, now I have skin-damage on my hands and my thighs, the aluminium unibody design has no cooling at all. I measured it later when I realised how hot it was, it was 90 degrees celcius. ON THE OUTSIDE.

The reason I didn't notice the temperature is because you won't notice how hot a thing is if it starts out cold.(same way you cook a frog)

Also, their performance sucks really hard.
#143 to #108 - alyosha ONLINE (12/04/2012) [-]
Wow, I never even considered temperature. My ASUS netbook has a similar aluminum body to the really thin MacBooks (people often mistake it for one) but I've never noticed it getting excessively hot. It's not incredibly difficult to cool a laptop properly, even one with good performance.

That's hilarious (not the skin damage, but how bad Apple makes their machines). Here's what I've been laughing about lately.
User avatar #92 to #91 - thelonelyfeel (12/04/2012) [-]
You have a point there, I somehow did not consider that.
User avatar #93 to #92 - alyosha ONLINE (12/04/2012) [-]
One point to Apple's credit, they do manage to make their machines smaller (laptop) without losing too much performance. The gap between Mac Pros and MacBook Pros is narrower than you see a lot from Windows manufacturers like Dell and hp. Still, there's less performance to start with, so it's kind of a moot point.

Fun hobby: go to Apple's website and pretend-order a Macbook. You can customize various options and put different parts in to tailor it to how you like. Watch as you build a not-really-that-incredible laptop that'll set you back $5,000, and then pause for a moment and consider that you could buy a used car for that money.

Look, I'm a windows guy myself. all i was saying, is that macs do have some areas, where they are actually superior. Saying that windows is better in every way, is just fanboydom.
User avatar #83 to #81 - alyosha ONLINE (12/04/2012) [-]
Plenty of things I don't like about Windows myself, but I cannot think of one single area where Apple has released a superior product. They're geared towards artistic applications, but software companies release really good stuff for Windows, too.

Just for ***** and giggles, whenever I visit a big computer store near me, I compare the top-end Mac to mid-range hp's. Desktops, sure, but the concept is the same. I've got the pics to prove this if you want, but last time I was there the $799.99 hp I looked at was superior in every single aspect to the Mac. Its hard drive was twice the size of the Mac. It had 4GB video memory to the Mac's 1. EVERYTHING was better, except it only had 10GB ("only") RAM to the Mac's 12GB. But the Mac costs $3799.99, whereas you could buy 2GB of RAM for under $30.

If you prefer their interfaces, that's your business, but when you actually look at the machines...Macs are just straight up inferior.

I started attending a prep school this year and noticed everyone had Macbook Pros. I pulled out my Alienware (I know, many think that they're the Windows equivalent of Macs as in overhyped and overpriced; it was a gift from my uncle) in class one day and one kid asked how much I paid for "modded Macbook" and another kid said "damn your black Mac has so much swag".

I stopped bringing my laptop to class after that.

Ahh the ignorance of some people eh? It makes me want to smack them in the face. I'd have to say my University is evenly divided between Mac and PC. It is funny to see some people parade their computers and show them off like they're one of a kind, and everyone else does not give a **** . In the end they're both computers and they get the course work (notes) done.
