As an atheist I'm completely against hating on gay people, but from a religious point of view you cannot compare that to killing in god's name. The bible forbids killing just because of one's religion, but also does explicitly forbid being gay. Sure, things have changed, but that's because people slowly realize religion is getting less and less compatible with the modern world. However, that doesn't change what's clearly written and explained in the book.
The main problem is people who are religious but don't follow half of what's written in the Old Testament (almost all Christians eat Pork for example), yet still use it against gays.
#198 to #128 - arkfire (11/30/2012) [-]
You do know that as Christians we are not held under the old covenant, which forbids eating pork.
User avatar #216 to #198 - deansg (11/30/2012) [-]
exactly, so don't use it to bash gays. Almost all Christians that do that base it on Old Testament stuff while not doing any of the other things it requires of them
User avatar #140 to #128 - fishtacos (11/30/2012) [-]
Most modern Christians (Catholics excluded) just use the bible as a moral code. They know that it was man-made and written in a time when people were less tolerant, so they ignore those parts because they know times change. Just because the bible says so doesn't mean they actually follow it, only the higher-ups in the Catholic Church do that, but they're a bunch of smelly old guys anyway.
#134 to #128 - mollike (11/30/2012) [-]
They pick out the things they like and discard the rest
#178 to #134 - arkfire (11/30/2012) [-]
Which is actually a sin.
User avatar #132 to #128 - sorrowofdaedalus (11/30/2012) [-]
I wouldn't necessarily say religion is growing less compatible with the modern world so much as that abrahamic religions are in particular.
User avatar #133 to #132 - deansg (11/30/2012) [-]
well yeh, but hating on gays is only applicable in Abrahamic religions isn't it? In the context I was talking about those were the religions I criticized. As far as I'm aware Buddhism doesn't have a problem with one's sexual orientation
User avatar #137 to #133 - sorrowofdaedalus (11/30/2012) [-]
Well yes, but I wanted to make that clarification clear. Religion still can be merited with being the foremost authority on moral philosophy beyond the government, and has its uses.
User avatar #138 to #137 - deansg (11/30/2012) [-]
I completely agree religion can be very useful and beneficial, but most modern religions today aren't built in a way for that to happen.

People Choose to be gay, they are not born with gay written in their DNA.
And i'm talking about Science, we are genetically made to mate with FEMALES.
User avatar #142 to #126 - ronyx (11/30/2012) [-]
We still do not know what most of our genes do.
User avatar #130 to #126 - sorrowofdaedalus (11/30/2012) [-]
You're wrong and right. gay people are not born with gay written in their DNA, but they don't choose to be gay either. The brain naturally develops and shapes as it ages, and it's been found that gay men have a smaller hippocampus than straight men. This suggests that environmental factors are the cause of homosexuality, not Genetics OR choice.

Without trying to sound too offensive, this thing is probably one of the biggest cop outs I’ve seen, nothing to back it up, nothing to justify it, It just expects you to go along with ignoring all those thongs god said in the "bible" because somebody reckons that this is what god would say, not a single line in the bible implies that god thinks this, but there’s a whole lot of lines of him saying he doesn’t. The rape, the genocide, the beatings, the slavery, and the torment, can't all just be swept under the rug because we don't like that and would prefer it if god didn't either, for man is not made in god’s image, god is made in ours.
Red thumb to your heart’s content, I just wanted to get that out.
pic unrelated.

Well the Bible also says Rape is ok if its for revenge, almost everyone in america should be stoned because they wear clothes made out of two different materials, Polygamy is ok. yeah so go ahead and think that the bible is perfect.
User avatar #111 to #109 - boomboyrage (11/30/2012) [-]
Don't get the wrong Idea, the bible is FAR from perfect I think its one of the most vile contemptuous things ever written, I'm trying to point out that this Christian Is using a pissy excuse to try and avoid the idea that god is a malicious piece of **** and not a beacon of role model flavoured light.

I don't want get involved with all the bitching at eachover, im an atheist but i believe that everyone is alowed their own opinions and beliefs so christians should bitch at atheist unless atheists attack christians AND vice versa.

But i do want to ask one question of the Christians on here.

i obviously do not believe any of the bible but my one great pet peeve from the bible is Noah Ark, do even christians believe this story and if so why?

Only down to earth Christians that can have a discussion and not a bitch fit need answer.
User avatar #158 to #80 - theexo (11/30/2012) [-]
it was probably highly exagerated, what probably happened was that his town got flooded and he got away on a boat with his family. or hell maybe it just rained really badly one day and Noah left assuming everyone died. or maybe the entire story is all ******** . who knows?
User avatar #86 to #80 - bec (11/30/2012) [-]
I agree with Gigels - my belief is that many parts of the Bible are symbolic and/or metaphorical - a guide to demonstrate how we can live moral lives, not a literal word-for-word truth.
User avatar #85 to #80 - kippa (11/30/2012) [-]
I'm a catholic, only because I was baptised etc. when I was younger. I am in no way religious anymore as I don't believe in God. I think most of the stories in the Old Testament, Noah's Ark included, were meant to act as metaphors. I don't know exactly what they symbolise but I don't think they were supposed to be taken literally.
#83 to #80 - gigels (11/30/2012) [-]
I'm a christian and I no, I don't believe that Noah's ark really happened like that. I think that the bible is mostly symbolic and I just use it for guidance tho.

Bible was written by regular human folk, based on the words of Jesus Christ... who was also a regular human folk which decided to create a cult.

But I too use that argument against Christians because they have to believe that it is the word of god :p

The only slide that is indisputably true is the first slide. Second slide, God did not create people to be gay, but he doesn't want them to be attacked or put down and he wants us to love them like any other person. 3rd slide, False, the bible is really old but it's divine message still holds tremendous value, and is extremely misinterpreted . 4th, LOL I would too.

Actually not killing each other is not the first thing "God" told the human but that he is the one god they must believe in. Not killing is like the sixth commandment.

Also "some things may have changer a bit since it was written" : if God is eternal, his truth is eternal, time does not do **** about it.

That's why it's stupid, but it's not because you're atheist you can say anything.
