I love religious arguments.
They start from nowhere, go nowhere, and end up nowhere.

User avatar #178 to #170 - darkjustifier (11/26/2012) [-]
Ha no, I believe there is a higher power but if he really cared what we did we'd all already be dead from his wrath.
#226 to #178 - johnshepherd (11/26/2012) [-]
So, more of a deist then?
User avatar #232 to #226 - darkjustifier (11/26/2012) [-]
I have not heard this term,"deist"
#234 to #232 - johnshepherd (11/26/2012) [-]
Deism basically believes that God exists, but that He just made us and then went minecraft on our asses and left, while Agnosticism believes that it's impossible to know if God exists. Personally, I'm Catholic, fyi, but I get kind of anal about the terms people use.
User avatar #238 to #234 - darkjustifier (11/26/2012) [-]
Indubitably, it'd get annoying if someone kept using the wrong terms around you.

But the Buddhist way focuses on the absence of happiness. Their belief is that to eliminate suffering, one must eliminate pleasure.
User avatar #154 to #148 - workinprogress (11/26/2012) [-]
that's not entirely accurate.

*sigh* Buddhism is, put as simply and quickly as possible, the search for understanding of why. Almost any question thought up beginning with "why" or "what is the purpose".
Buddha himself was believed to have reached this understanding and doing so cut off his spirit, or energy, from the grand cycle of renewal, otherwise known as reincarnation. By understanding it all, at his death he became a part of it all.
Buddhism today still follows his canons but in a way to promote symbiotic understanding with every person and everything known in the hopes of a "peace" among man, and in connection, the universe.
A person who follows Buddhism isn't supposed to "purge" their happiness, but to recognize that everything they feel connects them with...how everything feels.

User avatar #176 to #174 - yourbaus (11/26/2012) [-]
did you ever find out how he obtained that understanding?

He had actually searched for it for many years. In the beginning he was a prince, he even had a son. But he chose to leave his life of luxury for "something else".
He found it, or so the story goes, while he was trying a meditation practice that involved starvation. Nearing a state of complete exhaustion, it came to him in "perfect moment". It's said that at that moment he instinctively sat up, put himself into the lotus position and sat peacefully in the light of everything before him. It's also said, at that moment, marvelous acts of nature occurred around him. Trees bloomed, animals came and sat around him, things like that. After his moment, he left that meditation practice to encourage his own, one of simple meditation, contemplation, eating when needed, just caring for yourself as if anyone else would. One of the "rules" was to be humble. Don't hoard food and belongings, anything you may need you need to make yourself or beg for it.
Fascinating history of it all.

Almost everybody's most of these, it's not a trait related to religion, it's related to humanity as a whole. We all know we know and think anybody who things differently is wrong and stupid.
